About this deal

That sensor resolution means the A7S III can’t record 6K video, let alone 8K, instantly putting it behind the Canon EOS R5 on that front. What it can do, however, is record for a very long time. As with the Sony ZV-1, we had no issues recording for in excess of 30 minutes, with the only limiting factors being the card capacity, battery life and heat – and the fact that we never experienced any overheating warnings or issues on the pre-production A7S III we tested bodes well for the final retail unit. When it comes to power, the new Z battery delivers what Sony claims to be a 60% performance improvement over the Sony A7S Mark II's NP-FW50, which translates to up to 95 minutes of video capture, on paper. While we had a fair amount of variability in our device’s battery life, it comfortably captured 4K video for in excess of 75 minutes in our tests, which is great going compared to much of the competition. Another shortcoming of many 'HDSLR's is that they capture the relatively low resolutions of video by only sampling 'stripes' of their sensors - a process that's become known as line-skipping. This leads to lower vertical resolution in the video, along with a greater risk of moiré. The a7S avoids this by reading out its entire sensor thirty times per second. And, because its sensor appears to have been designed with video in mind, it's able to intelligently downscale this output into cleaner, more detailed video. Another significant change that Sony has made with the A7R V in comparison with earlier models is that as well as being slightly larger (3.2-inches vs 3-inches) and higher-resolution (2,095,104-dots vs 1,440,000-dots), the A7R V’s screen is mounted on a 4-way tilting mechanism. It’s like a tilting and vari-angle screen combined whereas the A7R IV has a standard tilting screen.

On the A7 III, Sony is claiming improved mount rigidity over its predecessors, saying the number of screws securing the lens mount has been increased to six to ensure durability when using heavy optics – a distinct possibility, given its appeal to pros as well as keen amateurs. http://www.dxomark.com/Cameras/Compare/Side-by-side/Sony-A7S-versus-Nikon-Df-versus-Canon-EOS-6D___949_925_836 When recording with S-Log2, you need to be aware that the minimum ISO available is 3,200. If you’re shooting outdoors, you’ll need strong ND filters to bring the brightness down.

There are plenty of other highlights: the A7S III can receive an analogue and digital input from its hot-shoe mount, capture 16-bit raw over HDMI when recording at 4K/60p for the first time, and it features a 9.44MP viewfinder – proving that photographers haven't been entirely forgotten about. Remember though that with any given f-stop prime, the light per unit area is the same, so the a7S' pixels shouldn't be any more prone to saturate than the a6000's. As long as the FWC/pixel size ratio remains the same between the two cameras. However, while the a7S's body exactly resembles its original 24 and 36MP sister models, the a7 and a7R (the a7 II's design is slightly different), it includes a whole raft of features and tools to support the videographer. These include the low contrast S-Log2 tone curve that allows more of the camera's dynamic range to be fitted into its video files and the option to record time code. Photographers more interested in stills may wish to note that most of these video features have subsequently been included in the newer a7 II, which also features revised ergonomics and in-body image stabilization. Key Features Update: The original Sony A7 is now getting quite hard to find new, but its place has now been taken by the Sony A7 II, which is steadily falling in price and is a better camera with in-body stabilization. Read our Sony A7 II review . This is further aided by its five axis optical image stabiliser, while extra-fine detail with minimal noise and processing speed is promised by the camera’s combination of its Exmor sensor and BIONZ X processor. One of the big new changes from the A7S II is the arrival of fully articulating screen. Sony teased the feature on the Sony ZV-1, but now it's finally made its way onto an A7-series camera, and not a moment too soon. While the comparison footage was shot on a tripod, the rest of our time with the A7S III was spent capturing handheld video in middling light. With ISO settings ranging from ISO 2000-4000 delivering results that look nearer to ISO 200-400, the A7S III is a liberating camera to use. Sony’s A7 series was divided into three lines that were started with the A7, A7R and A7S. However, as of 2020, Sony has now added the A7C to the series thus creating a quartet of full-frame mirrorless cameras. If they can't, I'm wondering why not. Is there a technical constraint? Obviously SLRs can't, but a mirrorless with electronic shutter should be able to. Unlike its fellow A7 cameras though, the A7S II doesn’t use a hybrid AF system of phase- and contrast-detect AF to achieve fast and accurate focusing, but rather relies on a whopping 169-point contrast detection AF system. As with the others here there’s the opportunity for single- or continuous-shot AF, or switching to manual, as desired.

The situation has got a bit more complicated since then. We’ve had the introduction of the Mark II and Mark III versions of each camera and Mark IV version of the A7R and A7, and now the Sony A7R V has arrived. Putting video to the side for a second, the A7S III’s bright, sharp viewfinder is a photographer’s dream, with crisp clarity, excellent coverage and ample brightness. And whether you’re shooting stills or video, the Sony A7S III handles well because it offers so many controls and top-end specs.

One additional bonus on top of the A7 IV is Sony's Multi-Interface hotshoe. This means you can plug in external microphones like Sony's ECM-B1M and ECM-W2BT without needing any extra cables or a power source. It's another big string to the A7 IV's video-shooting bow, compared to its predecessor. In the early days of the Sony Alpha A7-series there was the A7, the A7R and the A7S. Things were quite simple. The A7S was the one for video, the A7R was the high-resolution model and the A7 was the more affordable option. It was fairly easy to choose the right camera.

The A7R III also feels more rounded than the models that go before it. Its autofocusing system is impressive so it’s even suitable for shooting sport. The very best focusing system, however, is in the A7R V which has 693 phase detection points and the very latest subject detection options which include Human (Right/Left Eye Select) / Animal (Right/Left Eye Select) / Bird / Insect / Car / Train / Airplane, all of which work in stills and video mode. But the behavior becomes rather convoluted once you try to factor in the amount of light the camera is 'seeing', the selected aperture, and the setting you have 'Live View Display' set to (Settings Effect On/Off). For Sony cameras, that is. Zimmerman, Steven (12 October 2016). "Sony IMX378: Comprehensive Breakdown of the Google Pixel's Sensor and its Features". XDA Developers . Retrieved 17 October 2016. Finally, a few words about the price. Both cameras have been discontinued for some time, which means that your best chance is to find them second-hand in a store or online. I'd like some advice if possible in choosing a make/model based on the types of photography I enjoy, and what you think would serve me best for such subject matter: nature, landscape/cityscape, portraits, street/candid, macro, winter, B&W, flora/fauna, architecture/perspective. The Sony A7 is typically offered for sale body-only or with the low-cost Sony 28-70mm f/3.5-5.6 kit lens. (Image credit: Sony) Verdict
