About this deal

The WF-1000XM4 have been the undisputed king of earbuds since their release in 2021. Sure, newer models and features are out, but they've had big price drops that keep them on top. With times getting hard, money short, and some companies hiking prices to uncomfortable levels, Xiaomi has done something rather miraculous – it’s delivered a product that’s affordable and actually a bargain. Specs In terms of noise cancellation, we want to find buds that work well to drown out ambient noise day-to-day in a variety of environments. We test them in our pretty typical office environment, out walking in city traffic, and on public transport. So although you won't get exceptional sound with the JLab Go Air Pop, or noise cancelling or other high-end feeatures, during our testing we were surprised to find reliable Bluetooth connectivity, killer battery life, comfortable and light earpieces and solid music on the go. It would be churlish to expect more.

The Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds offer the best active noise cancellation of any earphones we've tested. That alone qualifies them for this list, but we're also fans of their rich, engrossing audio experience, as well as their intuitive companion app. We like that they support the AptX Adaptive codec for Android users, too. Who It’s For All of the options in our best wireless earbuds guide are good value for money. However, if you're looking for a budget pair of buds we've got some of those too. Bass frequencies sound full and present, without ever getting too boomy or woolly. If you want ground-shaking low-end then these aren’t going to deliver that, but then you’re probably not going to be looking at earbuds for that kind of performance anyway. Pros: great sound, effective noise cancelling, long battery life, very comfortable, good case, great controls, Fast Pair, multipoint, fancy Google Assistant features with Android. The triple-point connectivity (a first in a product of this type) proves stable and useful, and thanks to ‘Just My Voice’ technology these earbuds are far less prone to wind-noise interference than any number of rivals.

Something to note is that Immersive Sound and Hi-Res Audio can’t be used at the same time, as Xiaomi states that the features are mutually exclusive. But, there is a bonus feature that can cope with more than one thing at once and that’s the multi-device connectivity. Voices should be natural, instruments should stand out from each other, and there should be a good sound balance overall between bass, mid-range and treble. An IP54 rating means that the Buds 4 Pro are sweat-proof and should stand up to a rain shower or two. I wore them out and about in the wet and blustery Cornish autumn, and they held out fine, so I can’t imagine any urban settings posing a problem.

Of course, this is then balanced against lots of other factors, not the least of which is price. We know that a pair of cheap earbuds won't sound as good as premium ones – so we're judging them against competition at the same kind of price, not against something wildly different. But there’s a lot more to love about the Melomania 1 Plus, including outstanding audio performance and an app that we found genuinely useful and easy to control during our testing.

They are beaten on sound quality and noise cancelling by the very best, but for everyday earbuds, the Pixel Buds Pro are great and undercut top rivals on price, too. We haven't heard a single pair of buds that beat the ANC in these. The noise cancellation is exceptionally effective, they are comfortable to wear and sound great to boot. The second-generation AirPods Pro still closely rival the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds in the noise cancellation department. Sonically, they balance rich lows with crisp, sculpted highs, while top-notch extras like spatial audio and adaptive audio (transparency) modes add considerable value. Who It’s For The Buds Pro are standard Bluetooth 5 earbuds, supporting the standard SBC and AAC audio formats and Google’s Fast Pair with Android. They can be used in mono, which is handy for calls, and support seamless switching between paired devices. They support multipoint for connecting to two devices simultaneously, such as a phone for calls and a laptop for music. It's the same story for the sound quality, which we described as "one of the most expansive, three-dimensional and fun soundstages I've heard from a set of earbuds", also noting that "we get an extra ounce of detail and texture through the high end, too, compared to the competition". More expensive earbuds manage to provide even more detail (and there's no support for CD-quality sound here through aptX or Sony's LDAC wireless systems), but you have to spend twice as much to get even a bit better, really.
