About this deal

Small in the City is a 2019 New York Times/New York Public Library award winner for best illustrated children’s book. Though your technique does vary from book to book, brushwork figures prominently. Can you elaborate on why that is often your medium of choice? Primarily with a Pentel Brush Pen? The 2021 CILIP Carnegie and Kate Greenaway Medals are sponsored by Peters and ALCS, and funded by Carnegie UK Trust. THE WINNERS: St. David's is a tiny village situated in the Beacons area of Wales. The village is home to the church of St. David, where the legendary Saint David was said to be born. The town is known for its beautiful landscape including its historic cobblestone roads and views of the surrounding valleys. The area has a diverse climate, as it is located near sea/sea level and mountains which results in a temperate climate year-round. Visitors can explore the city's rich architecture or take a walk along the nearby coastal cliffs, which offer stunning views of the rugged Welsh coastline. Perhaps the most unique city in the United States is Santa Fe, thanks to the preservation of its traditional, precolonial Pueblo style of architecture throughout. Known as Pueblo Revival, along with hints of Spanish colonial, common traits include adobe exteriors, exposed wooden roof beams known as vigas, and flat roofs. This style is used for most homes in the city, but among the best examples are Palace of the Governors, which contains a local history exhibition, and New Mexico Museum of Art. In fact, art is Santa Fe’s main draw, with numerous galleries and institutions dedicated to Contemporary Native American Arts (MoCNA), the pioneer of American Modernism Georgia O’Keeffe, who lived in the city, and modern art at Meow Wolf Santa Fe.

Her father wants her to be a dutiful daughter, waiting for an arranged marriage like her sister Ruby. As a writer, this book got me thinking about my approach to storytelling. Is there a way to incorporate something unexpected? To surprise the reader? Have I experimented enough? Smith’s genius is evident in how so much meaning is conveyed with loose dark lines and blurry images. Reflections abound. Perspective shifts constantly. She appears to be alone. Why would a parent let a child ride on public transport alone? She does not seem fearful. Maybe it is a journey she makes regularly? For example, she signals for the bus to stop and steps off, confidently, into cold sunlight and shadows. After she alights, some text appears, and we realise that she is speaking reassuringly to someone who seems to be lost. Who can it be? This emotionally resonant ode to the resilience of small creatures in a big, loud world is tender and timeless—and a masterful merging of art and text.” — The Horn Book, Starred ReviewThe use of line, reflection, and perspective masterfully evoke a bustling gray city, making this thoughtful book an artful choice.”— School Library Journal, STARRED REVIEW

From the 2021 CILIP Carnegie Medal shortlist: Run, Rebel by Manjeet Mann (Penguin Random House Children’s) UPDATE: Whilst cataloging this book, I noticed that the CIP summary spoils the book's surprise. Those dummies. You have suggested that it can be limiting creatively to focus on the sense that you are creating a book “for children”.
