About this deal

Rigid Collodion can give you lasting and impressive scarred looks, but we want to make sure those looks don’t become permanent. So for this SFX Basics, I’m going to tell you everything you need to know about Rigid Collodion so that you can incorporate SFX looks into your cosplays! Collodion is used in the cleaning of optics such as telescope mirrors. The collodion is applied to the surface of the optic, usually in two or more layers. Sometimes a piece of thin cloth is applied between the layers, to hold the collodion together for easy removal. After the collodion dries and forms a solid sheet covering the optic, it is carefully peeled away, taking contamination with it. To create a fresher looking scar, outline where you want the scar to be with the Bloody Rose hue from the ProColorRing™ Bruise Wheel as the base before applying the Rigid Collodion. Then repeat the steps until you achieve the look you desire. Use the spatula to press and smooth out the edges until they meld into the skin, then use your spatula to create a gash in the wax to achieve a realistic looking cut. Pelouze announced to the French Academy of Sciences that Ménard and Domonte had discovered that cellulose nitrate could be dissolved in ether in: Pelouze (9 November 1846) "Observations sur la xyloïdine," Comptes rendus … , 23: 861–862.

Typically, 2-3 layers is going to give you a striking look. In most cases, this will be more than enough. While in Paris, René Dagron became familiar with the collodion wet plate and collodion-albumen dry plate processes which he would later adapt to his microfilm and Stanhope production techniques. The more layers you apply, the more dramatic and deep your scar is going to look. When administrating Rigid Collodion, wait for the first layer to completely dry before applying the next. Rigid Collodion works best in less mobile areas such as the cheek, forehead, or nose. While you can opt to use this SFX product in areas such as the sides of the mouth (i.e. for a Joker cosplay), it won’t last as long and will start to peel as the day goes on. When you’re satisfied with your scar, I also advise coating the scar with a finishing powder to eliminate the shine. You can use eye shadow instead of grease paint if you prefer. This is great if you want a softer-looking burn, scratch, or infection. [9] X Research source Has anyone dealt with this issue? Is it just not going to work because of my dry skin? Or is the Kryolan rc better?

Various shades of red are perfect for bleeding or burned skin. Browns and purples are great for bruising. Using a brush, apply Mehron’s Mask Cover Makeup to help blend the color of the Synwax to match your skin tone. Continue applying the Collodion until your wound is entirely covered. Reload your brush periodically whenever you feel it drying out on your skin. Continue working your way over the scar or wound and cover each section 2-3 times. If you’re covering a wider portion of skin for a burn or scrape, work in horizontal or vertical strips so that you cover the area entirely. [15] X Research source The solvent in collodion is usually ether. On a dry day it will evaporate and drop the temperature of a glass surface 50F or more. I'd think twice before applying it to an expensive objective.Using the Bloody Rose from Mehron's ProColorRing Bruise wheel, outline where you want the scar to be.This red hue, which will be the base of the scar, gives it a realistic look.

Spread spirit gum remover over the Collodion to wipe it off. Spirit gum is a skin-safe adhesive that makeup artists use to attach prosthetics. [20] X Research source Spirit gum remover, which is typically used to remove spirit gum, also happens to be the best option for taking off Rigid Collodion. Simply pour a dollop into a cotton ball or pad and wipe the area repeatedly using soft, repetitive strokes. Once the Collodion is flakey and soft, gently peel it off of your skin. [21] X Research source Richard Hill Norris, a doctor of medicine and professor of physiology at Queen's College, Birmingham (a predecessor college of Birmingham University), [6] is generally credited with the first development of dry collodion plate when in 1856 he took out a new patent for a dry plate used in photography in which the emulsion was coated with gelatine or gum arabic to preserve its sensitivity. Another method, using tannin, invented by Major C. Russell in 1861, followed and in 1864 W.E. Bolton and E.J. Sayce mixed silver bromide with collodion, so that by the mid-1860s the wet-plate process was being replaced. [7] Medical [ edit ] Converting the old grains to grams and anachronistic ounces to sensible milliliters took a minute or two and then I reduced the batch size to about 120ml total so that I could go through it in a timely manner and try something else. Here’s the formula I used (note that nitrocellulose concentration there only came out to be 1.3%):Spread additional layers over the wound for a stronger texture. If you want the skin to look more damaged, repeat this process by covering your skin in a second layer of Rigid Collodion. Brush the liquid Collodion over the wound the same way you did before. Wait another 2-3 minutes and inspect your skin again. If you still want the wound to be more noticeable, apply additional layers as needed. [17] X Research source Many wart-remover preparations consist of acetic acid and salicylic acid in an acetone collodion base used in the treatment of warts by keratolysis. Use a light powder foundation to soften the shine of the Collodion. Grab a powder foundation that’s slightly lighter than your natural skin tone. Load up a clean makeup brush or cotton pad with your foundation and dab it over the area where you applied the Rigid Collodion. This will take some of the shine out of the Collodion and make the wound appear more real. [18] X Research source Burnishing is a technique where one rubs the plate with something soft, essentially flattening silver crystals and making the image have a very shiny metallic appearance in the areas where it’s done. There’s no way to fully show it (even videos fall short), but below are similar close-up images of the plate before and after burnishing. The full plate after burnishing is the first image you saw in this post. Note below that along with reflective quality burnishing also changes the tone of the image to a cooler steel grey. Take the plate into a darkroom or orange tent (the plate is sensitive only to blue light) and immerse the plate in a silver nitrate sensitising bath (for 3–5 minutes)

Rigid Collodion is strong. If you’re preparing for a film shoot or performance of some kind, put the Rigid Collodion on right before you head out to perform and take it off as soon as you’re done. I also have to note that this collodion seems to be on the thin side (perhaps it would be best to step up gun cotton concentration to 2%…?) and while wiping off some minor fog on the plate I did hours later and doing it in my usual manner with a wet loose cotton ball I did put a tiny tear into the emulsion, something that again almost never happens to me. Mix a small amount of the Dark Red from the ProColorRing™ Bruise Wheel with a shade from the Mask Cover Makeup Palette that best matches your skin tone to create a muted red color.Rigid Collodion tightens the skin when applied. As the solution drys, it shrinks, pulling the skin inward– thus creating a scarring effect. You will start to feel Rigid Collodion working on your skin almost instantaneously. Using Rigid Collodion For SFX Makeup and Cosplay We like to use our 3-D Gel in Flesh color to create a raised burn. This product comes in solid form, so it needs to be warmed before use. You can heat the container in hot water until the gel is liquified or place the bottle directly in the microwave at 5 second intervals until ready to use. When I’m not writing, I’m drinking unhealthy amounts of coffee so that I can work late into the night on my latest costume. Use grease paint to add colors for burns, scrapes, or dripping blood. This is the best bet if you want to craft a burn, bleeding wound, or infection. Use a thin paintbrush or cotton swab and dip it into a small amount of your paint. Then, slowly drag the bristles against your skin where you want to apply the color. You can use a single shade of paint to give the wound some subtle color, or blend multiple colors together for a brighter, dynamic wound. [8] X Research source
