About this deal

Although this is the first Olympus camera to be released under the brand's new OM Digital Solutions owners, it seems likely it was in development long before. The good news is that the camera can be charged via USB (micro USB), so you can give it power bursts on the go if necessary (though it should be noted, it can’t be used while it’s being powered). Image and video quality Olympus claims that the Pen E-P7 enables the shutter speed to be reduced by up to 4.5EV below a normal safe hand-holdable speed. My tests find that to be an accurate assessment. With the M.Zuiko Digital ED 12–40mm F2.8 Pro mounted and at the 40mm end for instance, got around 50-60% of my images acceptably sharp at a shutter speed of 1/2.5 sec. At an effective focal length of 80mm, a shutter speed of 1/2.5sec is a 5-stop reduction. I even managed to get one image in ten sharp with a 1sec exposure time.

We particularly enjoyed using the Mono option, which works just like having a bag full of filters at your disposal, but is considerably more convenient to use and much lighter to carry. Ok, if this is intended for beginners, why not have a built in flash, while the more serious EM10 has one? I know they provide an external flash, but doesn't that make the whole thing bulky? I don't get it. The Olympus E-P7 certainly delivers in terms of focusing speed and perhaps more importantly accuracy too, with very few false positives.

Could even reduce the price by supplying weaker and smaller flash. Nobody cares about that anyway. I do but we are talking marketing and people are obviously buying that crap from sony that can't lit up 10ft at maximum output. There’s one other touch button that displays on the E-PL7’s screen when it’s forward facing in iAuto mode. The one touch E-portait button applies a skin-smoothing filter. So what’s new beyond the marketing realignment? The E-PL7 supersedes the E-PL5 which remains in the lineup for now, with the E-PL6 slotting in-between. Probably the biggest physical change on the E-PL7 is a new 3in touch screen that tilts into a forward facing position for selfie shooting. It’s an unusual double-hinged arrangement that has the screen appear below the camera. A new control dial has been added, improving the handling and the E-PL7 also adds built-in Wifi for transferring photos to your phone and remote control of the camera. The built-in image stabilisation has been improved and lastly the shutter mechanism, a cause for concern on the earlier model, has been updated. Sitting alongside the E-M10 Mark IV in the Olympus camera lineup, the EP7 inherits the same flip-down LCD screen that's perfect for taking selfies, more reliable continuous focusing on moving subjects, and USB charging, but dispenses with the EVF to make itself just that little bit smaller and lighter.

The Olympus E-P7's maximum shutter speed is 60 seconds and there's also a Bulb option for exposures up to 30 minutes long, which is excellent news if you're seriously interested in night photography. The shot below was taken using a shutter speed of 30 seconds at ISO 100. The camera takes the same amount of time again to apply noise reduction, so for example at the 15 second setting the actual exposure takes 30 seconds. As usual for an Olympus release, the E-PL7 also gains some extra Art Filters. The company's enthusiasm for constantly expanding this feature is understandable, given that it pioneered the as-you-shoot processing effect in cameras. We're not entirely sure why you wouldn't do this once the image is on your smartphone but Olympus insists that customer research suggests people like to add filters on the camera and on their smartphones. Does anybody know what the shutter sounds like on this thing? I was very impressed with how quiet the shutter is on the EM-5. Very Leica like. Not so impressed with the way the shutter sounded on the EM-10. I never thought I'd agree with Tedolph, but he's right. The EPL2 was nearly perfect in form factor and features. Give it a modern sensor, better screen, fast focus, and 5-axis IBIS, and you have the best PEN camera available. On the principle of ‘if it ain’t broke don’t fix it’ The PEN menu system and screen overlays have changed little in several generations. In some ways that’s a good thing, if you’ve owned an earlier PEN, you’ll have no trouble finding your way around the E-PL7’s Live control and Super Control Panel which between them offer alternative ways to access all of the cameras settings.Take the shot and when shooting RAW and SuperFine (top quality) JPEG in tandem there's a wait of an acceptable two seconds before the shot is fully committed to the memory card. Buffer memory is such however that you don't have to wait too long to squeeze off another shot if the opportunity presents itself (up to 16 Raw files). OMDS added the Pen F Colorand MonochromeProfilesfunction to the new E-P7. We also see features like the Color Creator, Highlights & Shadows (Curves), ART filters, and many others in the E-P7. The Pen E-P7 makes one wonder, did OMDS target the E-P series for its simplicity and elegance? Hi Sigfried and thank you for the reply. I would like to do as much color grading in the camera as possible. Already having good results with my EPL-9 which I have been using, although it does not allow changing each color individually. I know pretty well what I want when shooting video and having the possibility to tweak the color directly in the camera allows me to set up each scene better, the lights, atmosphere, acting, etc. I am into real filmmaking so I do not care for autofocus, mic input, flippy screen, 4K 60p, etc. If E-P7 works the way I hope, I would be able to set up 8 individual color styles (4 b/w and 4 colour). B/W would be great for old style movies. Battery life is important for every camera, but particularly so for a travel-oriented one. The 360-shot battery life may not sound overly impressive on paper, but in practical use, the camera easily lasts a full day of stills shooting. It may last a little less if you’re consistently recording 4K video clips, though. Olympus fans have been waiting to see what OM Digital Solutions would do after the imaging division of Olympus was sold and renamed in January 2021. The Olympus PEN E-P7 is the first Micro Four Thirds camera to come from OM Digital Solutions.

Olympus Camera design team: "Hey look, now that we don't include an integrated flash that space can be used for the wifi, so we can still provide the grip-options on the right... Naah!"The top plate in fact looks reassuringly professional, with the new control dial almost matching the diameter of the mode dial and both featuring a ridged, edge. The on/off button is small and recessed with an LED at its centre, it’s also ridged, this time with radial groove in the top, Olympus has clearly paid a lot of attention to the details, and it’s a reassuringly practical blend of form and function.

I read some photographers go up to 1 second on the EM1's... Mine seem OK, I tried mine with the 50mm 1.8 and sharp at 1/15th sec. Hope it hepls For better IQ in the same price-range or even better price , go for APS-C sensor, and here is a list of most of people are buying:This article is about released in 2021. For released in 2014, see Olympus PEN E-PL7. Olympus PEN E-P7 That said, for me this camera is to expensive. I don't mind the slightly bigger size of M10 - especially when this size really comes from features (EVF, dials/buttons, grip), not from poor design. I would get the M. Like other Olympus Pen cameras, the E-P7 has a rectangular, rangefinder-like shape. This is in contrast with Olympus’s OM-D series of cameras which have a mini-DSLR shape with a bump at the middle of the top plate for the viewfinder. This is because it's heavily based on specifications from previous models. On the one hand, that makes it somewhat unexciting, but arguably when you have proven spec combinations, it makes sense to keep them. In what way is it "seriously inferior"? Compared to the M10: same sensor, same JPEG engine, same screen, same battery, same IBIS, same shutter, etc.
