About this deal

Pregnancy wasn’t part of the plan; she had so much she wanted to do. It was not such a pleasant thought for Essie but she decides to continue the pregnancy.

Alex was adopted when she was three years old, she grew up feeling rejected by her birth mother, which seemed to eager to let her go and doesn’t want to have nothing to do with her. This book just reminded me, how much I love Susan Lewis's works. It's been a while since I read her books. I think it's high time I get started on it, isn't it? By the way, there is a sequel to this book: Oh, I hated they putting chalkboards saying this or that as it was a mute film. Come on, there are many other ways to do that, for example a narration. I will start by saying that I liked the writing style a lot - it is really detailed and depicting not just the overall picture, but every element of it that would help the reader to imagine the setting as if the reader were there, as well as to get to know the characters and their story from the very beginning, without it looking out of place and like too much. This is one of the most difficult books, I have ever read, it is heartbroken. I loved the main character, Alex Lake. She is a social worker, works with Child Protection, she is a hard worker and she will do everything to protect the children in her caseload. This has some interesting ideas but they didn't quite come together in the way I was expecting. Read this if you like stories about motherhood and expectations of women.

When one terrible night things go pear-shaped in a big way, the press go after Alex in a big way, blaming her for what has happened. As they do! They are out to sensationalise it all and Alex has to hide away at the rectory hoping it will quieten down soon. And she has put herself in a very compromising place. Go Alex! Based on a true story, No Child of Mine delivers a devastating depiction of the failure of the UK system to protect its children in the face of years of habitual sexual abuse from parents, social workers and pimps. Like vultures swirling above Kerry's head, they take, take, take until eventually, the body mind and spirit are crushed and there's nothing left. A newly wed couple buys a fixer up and happily plans a future for themselves and their potential careers. A surprise pregnancy, has Essie struggling to come to terms with all she has to give up by being pregnant. She is also reminded of their families curse by her grandmother, as every previous generation has lost the love of their life. So this is based on a true story and, like wow. This movie is just depressing. The fact that so many people got away with their abuses. No Child of Mine is a slow burn novel that unfortunately missed the mark for me. I went into this book thinking it would be horror and creepy, but it felt more like an old wives tale was a hint of thriller. What I did not like was that it was not as spooky as I expected. Yeah, some floors creaked and objects were moved, but there could have been so much more. Also, I’d want Sanjay’s POV. Essie is hugely independent and stubborn when it comes to how she has planned out her days. She will become a lawyer and be successful in her career. She had to wait while her husband, Sanjay, took steps toward an architecture degree first. So when she learns of her unplanned pregnancy while finally able to step her feet into a classroom, it does not come lighthearted. She’s far behind and feels that she deserves to focus on herself. Her entire life will change and she isn’t sure if she wants that. But in the end, she loves the life she is creating. When she must endure a terrible pregnancy full of pain and isolation, she becomes cognizant of forces that can irrevocably transform her life into one without love. Without Sanjay. Charlotte worked on her web, and when she had finished, the word TERRIFIC was written in the web. But the word wasn't for Charlotte, but for Wilbur, the magnificent pig. It never was about Charlotte.

This book is told through two timelines. In the past timelines readers meet Isabelle and Ana. Two women who are in love with each other but are married to men. With two timelines, I usually enjoy one more than the other. I found myself being very invested in the timeline in the past. I knew that there was going to be a connection to it and the present. I was fully invested in Ana and Isabelle's tale of longing, love, and being separated. I felt for them and enjoyed their letters. Essie Kaur has defined herself by her ambitions, a fiercely independent woman whose only soft spot is her husband, Sanjay. She never imagined herself as a mother. It was never a part of the plan. But then she finds out she's pregnant. As her difficult pregnancy transforms her body and life into something she barely recognizes, her husband spends the nights pacing in the attic, slowly becoming a stranger, and the house begins to whisper. In the end, I loved this, which says a lot, because I hated it most of the time I was reading it. This book is about social workers and their role at protecting children. I rated it 5 stars because it has been a very long time since I've read a book that really engrossed me, moved me, and ate at my soul like this one did. I just had to keep reading to find out what happened next. As her pregnancy advances, her husband becomes more and more distant and frantic. Is it the house or her family curse? Does true love win in the end or must it die?As disturbing evidence mounts and Alex’s superiors seem unwilling to help, Alex knows she will have to risk everything—her job and the life she loves—to save Ottilie. But Alex will also have to wrestle the demons of her own past before she can secure a future for this child in need. stars. Oh my! What a novel! This is the first time I have read Susan Lewis, so I wasn't so sure whether I would like it. However one very telling review on Goodreads from a reader I really respect - Laurel-Rain, had given it 5 stars so that was a good start! Essie refuses to believe in the curse and will stop at nothing to ensure her husband has a long life. I had hoped there would be some spookiness in Essie's new house but other than some whispering and an object occasionally being displaced nothing much happened. Even when the curse began to take hold there wasn't any suspense. The ending seemed too simplistic after so many generations had suffered this curse.
