Although probiotics are generally recognized as safe, if you have a compromised or weakened immune system (like if you have chemotherapy treatments, a critical illness or you’ve recently had surgery) you should avoid taking probiotic supplements and probiotic foods. Bacteria strains: We have chosen probiotics with different strains, including options with a blend of multiple bacteria strains. Secondly, it contains only two strains of beneficial bacteria, carefully selected based on their safety record and the strength of clinical evidence behind them. The CFU strength is also relatively low. What’s more, we found the capsules small and easy to swallow. Solgar Advanced Acidophilus + are also free from dairy, wheat, yeast, sugars, starch, artificial sweeteners and colors. As such, this product could be a perfect introduction to the world of beneficial bacteria — without a hefty price tag. When trying to support vaginal health, it is therefore necessary to use probiotic supplements containing strains of bacteria which are natural residents of thevagina, and which have been researched for the support of vaginal health. these capsules are delayed-release so will target the colon where harmful bacteria are usually found, rather than being broken down in the gutAccording to Kim Plaza, MSc, a registered nutritional therapist and technical advisor at Bio-Kult, there are currently no authorized health claims relating to probiotics/live bacteria supplements. “This is not necessarily related to the efficacy of such supplements but is more a reflection of the complexity of the field of microbiology,” she says. “For example, probiotic effects are often strain specific, and different species/strains may have different benefits in different conditions and/or patient populations.” If you don’t need a probiotics primer, you can skip to the next section. But if you’d like a refresher on exactly what probiotics do, we’ve got a nice little explainer for you. Kwoji ID, Aiyegoro OA, Okpeku M, Adeleke MA. Kwoji ID, et al. Using specific strains can provide a more targeted and effective approach to gut health, butthe synergy between multi-strain combinations, and the broader range of effects theymay provide when used together, needs more research.Strain-specific probiotic therapy can certainly provide benefits for specific conditions, but as you can see there are no universal rules - for some individuals taking a single-strain probiotic like Saccharomyces boulardiiworks well, whilst for others a dual or multi-strain probiotic might be better. The quality of the probiotics strains used is by far the most important factor to consider when selecting the right supplement, and looking at the available clinical trials behind the strains will help you to select the right strain (or strains) for you or your clients. The diversity of probiotic products makes choosing an appropriate probiotic challenging. One unanswered question is whether single-strain probiotics are more effective than multi-strain mixtures. The aim of this review is to account for both disease and strain specificity to determine whether single strains or multiple strains are equivalent or more effective. This literature review of randomized controlled trials from 1973 to 2019 was used to compare the pooled efficacy of trials with a single strain versus the probiotic mixture with same matched strain within the same type of disease indication. A total of 65 RCTs were included (41 with single strains, 22 multi-strain mixtures and 2 comparing single strain to mixture arms) for eight different disease indications (N = 10,863). Only three strains (L. rhamnosus GG, L. helveticus R52 and B. lactis Bb12) had corresponding trials with matching mixtures. Use of L. rhamnosus GG only was significantly more protective for necrotizing enterocolitis compared to two mixtures also containing different strains of B. lactis. The mixture of L. rhamnosus GG and B. lactis Bb12 was significantly more effective than L. rhamnosus GG alone for the eradication of H. pylori. In most cases, single strains were equivalent to mixtures. Choice of an appropriate probiotic should be based, not on the number of strains in the product, rather based on evidence-based trials of efficacy. In most cases, multi-strain mixtures were not significantly more effective than single-strain probiotics. The last several years have seen an explosion of research on the importance of the microbiome and the many health benefits associated with a balanced one. Probiotic supplements offer a way to help maintain this balance,” says Roshini Rajapaksa, M.D., a gastroenterologist with NYU Langone Health. They might serve as a sort of insurance supporting your overall health, particularly if you don’t eat a lot of fiber or fermented foods.

Thus, the modification of the microbiota composition begins to play an increasingly important role in the treatment of IBS [ 19]. In this respect, the supplementation of IBS patients with probiotics seems very promising. Probiotics are defined as live microorganisms which, when administered at the correct dose, provide a significant health benefit to the host [ 20]. They can improve gut microbiota dysbiosis and limit pathogenic bacterial colonization [ 21]. In addition, some probiotics induce an anti-inflammatory response, while others can modulate visceral hypersensitivity or significantly improve the integrity of the intestinal epithelium and decrease the gut barrier permeability [ 22, 23, 24]. Probiotics have been reported to be effective in reducing global and specific IBS symptoms (such as abdominal pain or flatulence), as well as in improving patients’ quality of life [ 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30]. Although experts agree that probiotics have beneficial effects in IBS and are safe for patients, they fail to agree on the composition, dosage, and duration of probiotic intervention. A recently published meta-analysis of thirty-five randomized clinical trials showed that supplementation with multi-strain probiotics can be superior in comparison with single-strain preparations in IBS symptom improvement [ 28]. However, experts still believe that further research into the role of probiotics is required if probiotic preparations are to be adopted as a treatment for IBS. Therefore, if you are considering a probiotic supplement with a large number of different strains, make sure tests have been conducted to ensure the strains all survive together at the stated billions count for the duration of its shelf life. What does the research say?The primary outcomes included an assessment of IBS symptom severity and improvement using the IBS-SSS and an evaluation of the improvement or exacerbation of global IBS symptoms using the Global Improvement Scale (IBS-GIS). But most importantly, we believe NOW Probiotic-10™ lives up to its marketing claims. After two weeks taking this supplement, our tester found their IBS symptoms had visibly reduced, and they experienced a marked improvement to their digestion. They also reported feeling ‘lighter’ and less lethargic. The probiotic industry is booming, but the benefits of probiotic products and the quantity of viable bacteria they contain can vary. So, instead of adding bacteria from an outside source, you might be better off consumingprebiotics, like fermentable fiber, which support your own beneficial bacteria. Good dietary sources of prebiotics include dried beans and other legumes, garlic, asparagus, onions, leeks, certain artichokes, green bananas, cold-boiled potatoes and wheat. Prebiotic supplements are available, as well.
