One nice feature is the Favourites function which gives you eight slots for saving your tweaked sounds. Each Favourite includes the sound with the filter and effects settings plus the chosen drum kit, and you can recall them on the fly. I think this feature turns the Mini Play into a potentially useful gigging companion. It’s a compact source of playable sounds with a filter and an arpeggiator that could fill a spot in your rig. I recently acquired the AKAI Professional MPK Mini MK3, and I can't help but sing its praises! This compact MIDI controller is marvelous. The whole purpose of mini controllers is to be portable and convenient for beginners or producers on the go. I know a lot of musicians who carry mini controllers with them when they’re traveling or on tour with their band. Software Would’ve loved to see aftertouch, but I totally get that not a lot of mini controllers have this feature yet.A good example of this is playing around with the top end of a highpass filter. You would get a much more fluid movement if you were able to cross what I call the ‘rotary dead zone’ that is physically applied by most knobs/encoders when you reach the end of their rotation (and physically won’t turn any further). Akai includes its MPC Beats software, a quality DAW (digital audio workstation) that can be a great tool for music production. Also included is VIP 3.1, full of VST instruments and effects that integrate seamlessly with MPC Beats. Keep in mind that this code will license Hybrid, Mini Grand, and Velvet so you only need to redeem it once in iLok. When this button is active, the MPK mini's pads will send MIDI Program Change ( PC) messages instead of MIDI Note On messages. PC messages send data to devices to select a specific program or preset. This would be a useful feature to use if you wanted to change a plugin preset on the fly directly from the hardware. The quality (for the price) is quite high. I really like the feeling and the response of the pads. With this being said, there definitely are some difference and improvements that Novation has made. First, let’s look at it as an instrument. The MPK Mini Play MkIII is portable, fun to play, with some decent sounds and just enough tweaking to make it interesting. It’s had a makeover since the last version, wrapping it in red, giving it a slight incline to the front panel, rearranging the knobs and improving both the keys and the speaker. These presets can be edited, adjusted, and uploaded to the MPK Mini using the MPK Editor.Preset 1 on the MPK mini mk3 is configured to align with MPC Beats. To load the MPC preset, press and hold down the Prog Select Button and press Pad 1. Now, your MPK's pads will line up perfectly with MPC Beats! The pads on the Novation MK3 take the cake over the MPK Mini Mk2. You have 16 RGB-lit pads versus the 8 pads on the MK2. Overall Comparison I think Novation definitely put the right step forward and, in my opinion, could’ve put their stamp on the best mini controller with a couple more additions. You can control the arp directly from your controller and you can change the rhythm, and direction as well. Against The Akai MPK Mini MK2 To load a preset, hold down the Prog Select button and press the pads to select the corresponding program number (1–8).
