About this deal

The 20mm is also a nice focal length but the Panasonic 20mm has a history of slow and noisy autofocus, The Olympus 17mm f/1.8 might not be a bad idea - I'll have to look into it - but I was avoiding it because I own the 17mm f/1.2. Completely different lens class and design, but I hate to duplicate focal lengths for primes if I can get away with it. I'm guessing the 15mm f/1.7 wouldn't stand up to the m.Zuiko Pros, despite being Leica-branded, but with its compact size it really doesn't have to. I'd get it specifically for the size, but being a different focal length helps to further justify it a bit, in my mind...

Working together with ATOMOS, a global company that creates innovativetechnologies and cloud services forfilmmakers everywhere, the new firmware enables the output of up to 5.8K / 29.97p and C4K / 119.88p RAW video data over HDMI to be recorded as Apple ProRes RAW on ATOMOS NINJA V and NINJA V+devices. Compatible lenses: H-XA025, H-ES200, H-E08018, H-X1025, H-HSA12035, H-ES12060, H-FS12060, H-X2550, H-HSA35100, H-FSA45200, H-ES50200, H-FSA100300 and H-RS100400I will say that the 25mm f1.7 is gaining a bit of a reputation for inconsistent AF (as in lens reporting focus but not being in focus an abnormally high percentage of the time). So I'd say that's way worse than slower but more accurate. Power Save Mode] can be selectable while the camera is powered with an AC adaptor(DMW-AC10, sold separately). Myself I'm finding that I use my 20mm a lot. Myself the 25mm is somehow just that bit tighter and larger that I don't use it so much. Which is contrary to what I experienced with 35mm gear where my 24 and my 50 were my favourites. On an Oly body the aperture ring don't even work, and the 20mm may randomly produce banding at high ISO, so there's that.

It's definitely not suitable for video or C-AF tho... If they were closer in price (which they are now), and I didn't care about the 17's size, it might've been a tougher choice, for me. This is where the tide starts to turn in Panasonic’s favor. I performed several real world tests with both lenses and, as you can see from the results in this post, the Panasonic beats the Olympus in just about every aspect of image quality. It is sharper, it has nicer bokeh, and I find the colors more pleasing although there isn’t a major difference between the two. Both lenses have problems with Chromatic Aberrations and blooming but that is nothing surprising for the M43 format. In the end, I have to give this category to the Panasonic as it edged out the Olympus in every comparison shot that was taken. Panasonic 20mm shot at 1/400 sec, f1.7 Olympus 17mm shot at 1/320sec, f1.8 100% crops from the images above. Olympus is on the left, Panasonic is on the right. Olympus 17mm shot at 1/500sec, f8 Panasonic 20mm shot at 1/500sec, f8 100% crops from the images above. Olympus is on the left, Panasonic is on the right. Olympus 17mm shot at 1/1250sec, f1.8 Panasonic 20mm shot at 1/1600sec, f1.7 100% crops from the images above. Olympus is on the left, Panasonic is on the right. Olympus 17mm shot at 1/200sec, f1.8 Panasonic 20mm shot at 1/200sec, f1.7 100% crops from the images above. Olympus is on the left, Panasonic is on the right. Panasonic 20mm shot at 1/125sec, f5.6 Olympus 17mm shot at 1/125sec, f5.6 100% crop of the images above. Olympus is on the left, Panasonic is on the right. Yes I have seen that comparison between the two lenses. And a host of others since I was interested in the 17/1.8 when it appeared. In the end, I decided to keep the 20/1.7 I already had instead. Shooting assist functions including WFM (Wave Form Monitor), Vector Scope, Luminance Spot Meter, Zebra Pattern can be used during RAW output.I have been to Sweden, in the early 90s before the existance of google translate, had a few lessons before, several after and then I translated two books the hard way from swedish to french. A very hard exercise that worn down my fransk svensk ordbook, but with obvious results in the end. The reason the AF is mentioned so much is because that is the weakness. That's pretty much it. It's an absolute gem of a lens otherwise. If they came out with a 20mm f1.7 III with AF like the 15mm f1.7 then I think this would be a lens with zero "cons" on the review summary. Or if the 17mm f1.8 had optics like the 20mm f1.7, that would work too! The 20mm lens has been reported to suffer from banding on some Oly bodies, for reasons I haven't seen explained satisfactorily, so I've avoided it as I have both Oly and Pany bodies.

There is no need of upgrading the camera with DMW-SFU2 if upgrading with DMW-SFU2 was once done before. And use both. The difference is I half press with the 20. It's at most a half second. I got great shots at our family Christmas dinner with it. Works fine at 1.7 and great at 2.0. Color and sharpness for both lenses are excellent. The difference in focal length is sufficient for me to justify both.

I have a GM1 paired with 14/2.5. Perfect street setup. Love the 14/2.5 warmer colors - nice for low-light/indoors group photos.

Ever since the time of introduction, the LUMIX GH6 gained high attention and have been acclaimed after its release to the market not only from the conventional GH users but also from the new GH users worldwide. The GH6 is planned to “evolve” with firmware updates to further enhance its performance and usability for professional video creators, as previously announced. It's been discussed ad nauseam, so you can probably use the search tool and find plenty of opposing viewpoints if you're in a hurry (not that I'm whining about another thread on the subject, or I wouldn't be commenting). The 20mm is also a nice focal length but the Panasonic 20mm has a history of slow and noisy autofocus, banding at high ISO, and in some cases excessive CA when used on Olympus bodies. Same problem there (FoV difference) but my verdict is clear anyway. Interestingly, Ming Thein (who is an excellent photographer and whose test shots I much appreciate) came to different conclusions based on the same images. Here are my comments on his comments for those interested:

Ergonomics Winner: My personal preference is the Panasonic due to it’s weight and size, but I would have to call a draw on this one. Autofocus
