About this deal

While it's far from the fastest laptop money can buy, the 14-inch Lenovo Ideapad 120s performs surprisingly well for a system that costs about the same as a mid-range tablet or Chromebook.

Lenovo Ideapad 120s-11IAP - Notebookcheck.net External Reviews

With a 2-cell (32 watt hours) battery supporting our review unit, the IdeaPad 120S lasted a decent 7 hours and 43 minutes in our Laptop Mag Battery Test (continuous web surfing over Wi-Fi). That runtime is longer than those from the Lenovo IdeaPad 100S-14 (5:51), the Asus L402SA (6:03) and the HP Stream 14 (7:04), but shorter than the category average (8:42).

Best of all, it works across all your Windows 10 devices to keep you organized. Producing a paltry 64 percent of the sRGB spectrum, the IdeaPad 120S' color range is similar to that of the 67-percent Inspiron 11 but less than the 78-percent score from the Stream 11. The category average for ultraportables is a higher 102 percent. Don't worry about the IdeaPad 120S getting too hot to handle. After we streamed 15 minutes of HD video on it, our heat gun recorded temperatures on its touchpad (77 degrees Fahrenheit), keyboard (92 degrees) and underside (91 degrees) that fell well below our 95-degree comfort threshold.

The Ideapad 120s is a modern, stylish take on the laptop computer. It's perfect for everyday tasks, and the HD screen looks incredible. If you're looking for reliable processing power combined with high performance, the 120s is a perfect companion for work and play. Long-term stability is questionable. After several runs through our Cinebench R15 loop test, the Ideapad 120s 11 is consistent in its inconsistency. Scores are all over the place with frequent dips in performance. Users should expect some kind of performance throttling during extended workloads. In 2016, the company ranked first in the world in computer sales. It still held it in 2023 with about 23% global market share. Important product lines are Thinkpad, Legion and Ideapad.

The IdeaPad 120S' Intel Celeron N3350 CPU scored 2,626 on Geekbench 4, a synthetic benchmark that measures overall performance. That showing exceeded the scores we saw from the Lenovo IdeaPad 100S-14 (1,880), the Asus L402SA (1,934) and the HP Stream 14 (1,817), all of which have Intel Celeron N3060 CPUs. When testing the IdeaPad 120S at home, I discovered its audio output is so slight that it can be overshadowed by sidewalk traffic leaking in through the windows. When I played Run the Jewels' "Early," I found the laptop's volume filled only the smallest rooms and that, while it produced decent bass, vocals came out hollow and without any timbre. I tried to remedy the situation but soon learned that Lenovo didn't include any sound adjustment utilities. Maintenance options are practically non-existent. There are 10 Torx T4 screws and several stubborn plastic clips holding the bottom panel on. During our attempts at disassembly, these clips seemed determined to hold on. Prying the bottom panel off risked damage to the case; as such, we did not proceed any further. There is likely no need; the larger 14-inch Ideapad had all components except the battery and wireless card soldered to the mainboard. The smaller 11-inch unit is likely no different. Because of the low TDP of the CPU and the smaller screen size, power draw is quite small. Under maximum load, the machine pulls a mere 12 Watts, which is less than almost every other compared device. Compared to the 14-inch Ideapad 120s, the 11-inch model pulls about 10% less power under load and about 25% less while idle. Life is hectic, and the last thing you want to worry about is running out of battery. The Ideapad 120s offers over 8 hours of battery life and can charge your other devices - even when powered off.

The IdeaPad 120S' screen performed better in our brightness test, registering 219 nits on our light meter. That score didn't surpass the category average (254 nits), but it's better than the showings we observed from the Lenovo IdeaPad 100S-14 (188 nits), the Asus L402SA (206 nits) and the HP Stream 14 (186 nits). The performance of this laptop is very poor, that is, we achieve what we set to do, but is pretty slow. The processor is always at 100%, and oddly enough I've seen dropbox can take up to 60% of the load, and when it's not dropbox is windows powershell, skype (which we don't even use) or service host something, each process taking more than half of the load at a time. It's pretty obscene.

There are hardly any tablets in this display size range anymore. For subnotebooks, on the other hand, it is the standard format.

I've heard linux can revive very old pc's, so I'm wondering if installing some linux distribution I could reach better performance doing the tasks we usually perform on this device. I think this way makes things easier and saves the precious scarce storage at my disposal. However I'm very ignorant about pc tech. Will I be able to install windows if linux doesn't fill my needs? would I have to buy a new windows license? Is the windows 10 pro key saved in the bios or something? is it enough if I just save the windows key/id? However, if you simply want an affordable notebook with reasonable performance, the IdeaPad 120S is a reliable choice for web surfing and office tasks.
