In comparison, all tested devices range from 0.1 (minimum) to 240 (maximum) ms. » 11% of all devices are better. This isn’t a typical thin laptop though. It is thinner than the Legion 5 Pro, being .92″. But the overall weight of the machine is about a pound higher than your typical thin and light gaming laptop of this size. So keep that in mind, if you are debating between this and other thinner models out there. For instance, in Shadow of the Tomb Raider’s built-in benchmark running with its highest settings at 1080p, the Legion 7i averaged more than 30 frames more per second than its competition. Its 2560 x 1600p performance was also impressive here, coming in only slightly below its rivals’ 1080p performance.

I could easily make out the song’s vocals, high notes and even bass throughout my whole listening experience, without any hint of tinniness and with virtually no lost information. The panel has a 165Hz refresh rate, which is plenty fast enough for every game I used. It also supports Gsync. For fast-paced games, you’ll also want to enable Overdrive in the Vantage software, which enables a 3ms response time. You have to be careful with the bass. Turned all the way up, I felt some vibration throughout the palmrest. I thought it was ok for the most part but I can see how that would be annoying. Rise of the Tomb Raider, set to its most demanding settings with ray tracing enabled, scored 99fps at native resolution, while the lowest score I got from Wolfenstein: Youngblood was 105fps and that was with ray tracing on, DLSS off and running maximum detail levels at 2,560 x 1,660. Drop the resolution down to FHD and the frame rate jumps to 141fps.

There are some differences in CPU performance between models. If you need the most CPU performance, the Intel model is clearly the better buy, as the scores were significantly higher across the board. But if you’re simply gaming, I don’t think you’ll notice as much of a difference. Not a lot changes over the default Performance profile, but the GPU scores do improve by 2-7% in some of the tests. Hopefully, this is a temporary solution and someone gets their drivers worked out. It’s probably an issue with Intel and Nvidia since the Ryzen models don’t seem to struggle with Advanced Optimus as bad. The Lenovo Legion 7i had a battery life of about 5 hours on our in-house battery test, which is within expectations for a gaming laptop with these kinds of specs. For instance, the Alienware x17 is another Intel Core i9/RTX 3080 laptop that actually had about a half hour less battery life on the same test. That said, we do occasionally see exceptions, such as the 5:58 battery life we saw on the AMD-powered Asus ROG Zephyrus Duo 15 SE. While we got those numbers with just one of that laptop’s two displays turned on, the Zephyrus only had 5 fewer minutes of battery life than the Legion when we tested it again with both displays running.

The laptop's camera quality is very poor. My face was blurry, pixelated, and a lot of details on my tattoos and beard were missing. I had trouble accurately capturing bright colors from my LG CX’s rainbow-colored screen saver, which could be seen behind me. When I tried capturing footage in a brighter room, I noticed how much blur was removed. But the better lighting only makes the pixelation more noticeable. Software and Warranty on the Lenovo Legion 7 Even though this laptop is made of metal, I didn’t detect any micro-vibrations while plugged in with an ungrounded GaN charger. I’ve seen this with every metal laptop up until now, so I found that interesting.

The same is true of the CPU tests we performed, with the Legion 7’s 1,407 single core and 7,336 multi-core scores in Geekbench 5 being excellent too, and the trend continued in the Total War and Metro Exodus performance tests - with the Legion 7 outputting a buttery smooth framerate even at ultra settings. Keep in mind though, the iCue software for RGB is stupidly inefficient, so I just opted to keep it off completely for the remainder of my testing. It actually made the temperatures better… The 16in 2,560 x 1,660 IPS panel is a joy to look at. Bright and pin-sharp, it’s also impressively colour accurate and abundantly colourful. Brightness maxes out at a very respectable 490cd/m², while the contrast ratio is a solid 1,208:1. It’s a 16” 2560×1600 px resolution panel, with a unique 16:10 aspect ratio. What makes this really special is it replaces a 15.6” panel without increasing the overall size of the laptop – the bottom bezel just gets smaller.
