Chances like this don't come around very often and I was frothing at the mouth like a rabid dog with the excitement of being able to read the latest book In this amazing series on release day. I now know what it feels like to be one of those Harry Potter book nerds queuing outside the bookstore and I don't care one bit. It seems like I've been waiting a lifetime for this opportunity. The King of Shadows is the latest installment in this very unique series of historical thrillers that feature the eighteenth centuries equivalent to James Bond, Matthew Corbett, a professional problem solver, who leaves no stone unturned in his search for the truth. With this character, the author has breathed new life into the historical fiction genre. When he wakes, Nat finds himself in 1599, an actor at the original Globe - and his co-star is none other than the King of Shadows himself: William Shakespeare. A Big Splash · 166. King of Shadows by Susan Cooper | Goodreads

Here is where episode eight starts, with Matthew Corbett aboard a ship with Fell and another monster named Slaughter. But some greater evil is in turn chasing them, derailing their plans, and my expectations for a jolly time in Venice. Instead, the company gets marooned on a mysterious island off the beaten commercial seaways. The quality of the writing, storytelling and characters are as fantastic as the first Matthew Corbett book! He went to search for the Blade in the place where Gith was reported to have gone missing, the Nine Hells. There, Jerro was able to retrieve the blade from Levistus, the Still Lord of the Fifth Circle of Hell, and his servant Mephasm. He then fought the King in a titanic battle in the tiny village of West Harbor, where he banished the King. The Blade was shattered in the fight, however - blasting Jerro himself into the Hells - and one shard was embedded in the chest of the infant who would grow to bring about the King's final destruction.Golden Legend · 2. Gold Rush · 3. A Day in the Life of a Golden Ninja · 4. Sweatin' to the Goldies · 5. Golden Hour This is probably my least favorite episode in the series, yet my expectations from this Matthew Corbett historical adventure are so high than even this misfire was quite good when considered as a stand-alone book. Which new readers can do, since each book can be read on its own merits and this particular voyage across the Mediterranean Sea is like a side-quest to the main plot. Just as he is about to leave, the Lightning Dragon appears out of nowhere. Jay instinctively jumps off the ruin with the support of his gliders while his fellow comrades follow suit. Upon seeing the ninja escape, Samukai laughs evilly as things going according to plan. The ninja escape to the Forest of Tranquility, where they are celebrating as Wu meditates.) There's only two things I truly love in my life and that's my daughter and Robert McCammon's Matthew Corbett series. Were talking about, quite possibly, the best reading experience I've ever had. It is absolutely immense, but you don't need me to tell you. Wait a second, what do you mean you've never heard of Matthew Corbett??? Surely you jest. Well just in case you're actually being serious, let me enlighten you. Seems like I waited forever for this one to arrive. In my opinion, Robert McCammon is a master. This installment of the Matthew Corbett series didn't disappoint!

The Turn of the Tide Memory is the king of shadows,” DeKay repeated. “You being a problem-solver for the Herrald Agency ... you should know. How two people – three, four, a score of them – can witness the same moment yet have vastly different memories of it, thus throwing shadows over the absolute truth.” The ending is excellent, genuinely so, but I can see how it may prove divisive. It's admittedly stagey but that reflects the topic of the book quite well so I felt it fitted. This is the only part where it lost a mark for me.My top book of 2022 so far. I could leave it at that, but why say a few words when you can say a thousand? King of Shadows is another immense achievement from one the most skilled and talented authors in the business. Kai: No! It's mine. I shouldn't have come on my own. You don't have to do this! There has to be another way! On holiday in Cornwall, Simon, Jane and Barney discover an ancient map in the attic of the Grey House, where they are staying with their much-loved but mysterious Great Uncle Merry. My other major issue with the series, is the degradation of the adversaries pitted against Corbett. Almost every major fantasy and horror series has this problem of getting to the high stakes and the major monsters early in the game and being at a loss what to come up with to trump them in later books.

In “Staging Nothing: Hamlet and Cognitive Science,” I explore the moment in Hamlet when Hamlet jokes about the “nothing” between Ophelia’s legs. I argue that such a moment unveils the boy actor who indeed did have something between his legs and that provides titillation and a cognitive work out. Matthew and Hudson are taking a sea voyage with Matthew under the employ of Professor Fell (More or less) with Hudson serving as Matthew's over watcher. Once again, McCammon weaves an interesting tale that's both rich with a few new characters along with some deep diving into the history of others. He continues with his magic of capturing what appears to be the sprit of life in the 1700's. Wu jumps on top of the Fire Dragon's head as it reaches out of the lava. It roars angrily, making Nya scream. It seals the trio inside the temple so that they would not escape.) All of this because the ill-smelling smog of this volcanic island is playing games with the memories of the visitors, making them question the reality before their eyes and their own recollections of the past.

The ending sets up the possibility for the final entry in this amazing world and I'm starting to feel deep sadness already at the thought of it ending. There are worse than Professor Fell out there. I have a feeling that Professor Fell will seem as a kindly old uncle bouncing baby Corbett on his knee when you meet who’s waiting for you in the future. Because take it from me, my boy ... the worst is yet to come.” I am from the netherworld. Your netherworld … the place that exists in every man, unknown until the terror of the mind can no longer keep it gated and secured. Then it bursts out in desperation, and comes to urgent life with a thousand tentacles to seek the survival of its single inhabitant." The Invitation · 36. Only One Can Remain · 37. Versus · 38. The Corridor of Elders Cooper wonderfully creates the excitement of theatre, the charisma of Shakespeare, and the pain of bereavement.

King of Shadows Summary | SuperSummary

The King of Shadows might be the best of the series so far in my opinion. There are disgusting and horrific aspects of the story I didn’t like, but the overall story is absolutely a five star read. As Wu, Nya, and Kai attempt to escape the Fire Temple, Garmadon wakes up the Fire Dragon to stop them from doing so.) The latest addition to the Matthew Corbett series is another brilliant book, I have said it before, this series is my favorite book series ever, McCammon has such a rich fantasy, the writing is so good, and you never know what to expect because each book is so different from the next. The story would have been better for me if the play Nat was acting in ‘Midsummer Night’s Dream’ was explained more. Not everyone knows what it is, and was often referred to as ‘the Dream’ without any explanation. I was also disappointed by the ending, I shall not say much because I might spoil it for you, but I found it unfinished, not precise enough, with too many questions left in my head for my liking.Master Class · 2. Green and Gold · 3. The Weekend Drill · 4. Elemental Rider · 5. Blue Lighting · 6. Samurai X-Treme Not much is known about the King's early days, save that he was a talented human magic user who was trained for twenty years by the elf Master Isym in the arcane arts. Fiercely patriotic to his homeland, the Second Illefarn empire, the King was one of the hundred who answered the call by the priest Annaeus to sacrifice himself to become a weapon against Illefarn's enemies: the orc tribes to the north, and Netheril to the east. After he was selected out of all the candidates, the King underwent a 100-day long, extremely painful ritual in which Annaeus merged the man with the Weave. When the ritual had passed, the man had lost all traces of his former self; he was now known as "the Guardian," a perfect weapon with only two goals: to protect Illefarn and destroy its enemies. Todd Oatley, “Simulation of Substance and Shadow,” 22. While I share Oatley’s understanding of fiction as productive, I am unconvinced by the strong simulation claim that readers or spectators simulate the emotional experience of the characters.
