Estaba convencida de que nada de lo que publicase posteriormente se acercaría a la maravilla que es Rosalie Blum, y aunque esta Juliette no me ha gustado tantísimo, quizás porque el impacto de lo novedoso se pierde, me parece también una obra genial. Camile Jourdy es una genia y esta novela es un fiel reflejo de su mente cósmica. El dibujo es el más bonito del mundo, hay colores pastel y la tipografía es preciosa. Es, sinceramente, una obra de arte. Me ha gustado aún más que "Las Varamillas" y aún me queda por leer "Rosalie Blum". De verdad, la perspectiva de esta autora es única. While her mother dabbles in painting and younger men, her father is convinced that he is developing dementia. Meanwhile, the family’s aging grandmother doesn’t recognize anyone and has a tendency to chew on the tablecloth at dinner parties. De Camille Jourdy me interesa muchísimo cómo, al contrario que la mayoría de autores de cómics, decide que sus historias no traten sobre hechos o personajes extraordinarios sino sobre la suma de vivencias cotidianas que constituyen las vidas anodinadas y costumbristas de la inmensísima mayoría de la humanidad. Me gusta que sus historias incluyan rifirrafes familiares; que sus personajes sean del montón (bajo); que en las conversaciones se hable sobre dinero o cuidados; que la soledad, la mediocridad y la infelicidad planeen sobre sus protagonistas como también planean sobre cualquiera de nosotros, sus lectores. Most people look like they’re struggling with their weight; men are disinclined to shave but not quite ambitious enough to grow beards; smoking is seemingly required by law. The place to be, for many, is the local bar. Called Le Tropical, its ambience is as unlike a beach in Tahiti as could be imagined. But it is the neighbourhood nerve centre, practically the only informal gathering place in a setting that otherwise discourages such things. Jourdy renders these encounters in glorious shades of ripe pink flesh and the deepest green of high summer. In 2007, the first volume of the trilogy is published in France. And it is finished by the launching of the third volume of the series two years later. It’s this second element that provides an indication of the other core themes of the book. Namely disappointment, the grief of dwindling dreams, the encroaching shadow of mortality and time passing. Or as Juliette and Polux allude to, the “tragic dimension.” While there is some crepuscular sadness here, the meat of the story is marbled with rich veins of humour, wonder and the loving touches that can only come from close observation. Aleshia Jensen’s precise translation from the original French captures the nuances of how families talk to each other, alternating between sharpness and hilarity, as well as the cadences of small-town life. Camille Jourdy’s marvellous new comic book begins with a train journey: a young woman, Juliette, is leaving Paris, and heading for the small town where she grew up. Exhausted by the city and the seething anxiety from which she has suffered ever since she was a girl, she longs for the awkward embrace of her somewhat complicated family: her divorcee father, now lonely enough to be on the dating apps; her mother, an amateur artist with bohemian leanings who has recently taken yet another younger lover; her older sister, Marylou, who though in possession of both a husband and two small children, is also having a one-day-a-week affair with a man who works in a fancy dress shop (he comes to her for joyful afternoon sex in her greenhouse, disguised as a bear, or a wolf, or a ghost). Wordless and experimental, Joe Kessler’s “ The Gull Yettin” traces the disquieting connection between a young boy and the shape-shifting, birdlike creature that is obsessed with him. We follow the boy from the death of his family, through a perilous voyage across the water and into, for a time, the care of a woman who takes him in as if he were her own. Il n'est pas de la famille mais vit dans la maison qui était la leur. Pollux est un vieux garçon qui passe son temps au café du coin, qui se laisse aller. Même ses femmes imaginaires l'ont quitté. This slice of life graphic novel is so poignant, what with the plot, the language, the watercolors. It feels truly pastoral, rife with small-town drama and family plots. There family secrets, an aging grandmother, and tense moments between townies and families. Me declaro fan máximo de Camile Jourdy y en concreto de esta historia. De hecho, a fecha de hoy, considero que es una de las mejores novelas gráficas que he leído. Directamente incluido en mi estantería de "joyitas".Encantoume. E ese é o verbo preciso, porque é un cómic "encantador": bonito, emocionante, moi divertido e agudo na súa maneira de achegarse a personaxes perdidos. É o primeiro que leo de Camille Jourdy (é da miña quinta!) e paréceme fabuloso. A historia non é sorprendente porque non o quere ser: é un compendio de vidas "provincianas" nunha cidade francesa "de provincias" (que a autora coñece e debuxa con moito cariño). E debaixo desa capa de presunta vulgaridade hai segredos, vidas complexas, ganas de amar e de ser amad@ dun feixe de personaxes trazados con empatía. Si les dessins sont tout en rondeur, si les couleurs sont pastels et recèlent un charme un peu désuet, force est de constater que chez " Juliette" tout n'est pas si tendre, si doux; au contraire. Cette histoire, qui coule tout doucement, comme le temps et et la vie qui passent, sans trop de bruits ou de grands fracas, de tragédie est faite de souffrances, de silences qui font mal, de rendez-vous manqués et de poésie aussi. A vibrant tableau of small-town life as seen through the eyes of a woman returning home from Paris.
