We have shared some of Ed Vere’s books before and we were looking forward to this one. We read it a few times before talking about the story. The story involves a grumpy frog ‘having one of those days’ and there is an awful lot in the book to relate to your own experiences. I did somewhat enjoy the book but the wittiness of the author may be too hard for children to get it. As children become familiar with the story encourage them to join in, for example with the ‘I’m not grumpy’ parts or with the narrator commentary – eg say hello to grumpy frog. The children find it especially funny when grumpy frog looses his temper. Interestingly the illustration style looks like scribbles to express some of grumpy frogs emotions. Nearly every time I have read it to different children they comment that someone has scribbled in the book!… Great opportunity to talk about illustrations! Age 3-5+ years In this striking picturebook we meet a very grumpy frog with so many issues – he only likes green things, absolutely hates pink, won’t go swimming because the water is blue or bouncing because the trampoline is yellow. He does enjoy hopping and racing, just as long as he wins of course. However when he unsurprisingly ends up with no friends, grumpy frog feels pretty sorry for himself. How will he react when a (pink!) rabbit offers to play with him? A funny story about feeling grumpy, compromising, saying sorry and making friends. Make a list of words that could be used to describe different shades and tints of green (e.g. lime, pistachio, emerald). While this book's text and illustrations are simple, there are many things that can be discussed after reading this story. Grumpy Frog by Ed Vere starts with a happy frog that loves winning, hopping, and the color green. All other colors can easily turn him from happy to grumpy. But pink is his all-time worst color. While his friends are just fine with all colors, his reluctance to accept anything but green leaves him unable to join his friends when they are swimming (blue water), bouncing (yellow trampoline) and enjoying other things together. Frog holds tight to his thinking that all colors except green just don’t work for him and cause him to be grumpy. So he sits alone. Without friends. Convincing himself that he is fine. But will something help him change his mind? Or will he remain strong regarding his thoughts and feelings? And is there even a legitimate reason to feel happy and grumpy? They are unable to hop due to their body shape, and instead move ponderously by walking on their relatively short legs.
