It starts out slow, but don't give up, you will be richly rewarded. I read a LOT of this book out loud to my husband because it is laugh out loud hilarious! We don't have this in our library yet but we have his first book "MILLIONS" & it's my favorite of the two, but only by a hair. It was turned into a delightful English movie. Very quirky, my favorite kind! (The author was a famous screenwriter before he started his hand at children's books, MILLIONS being his debut. So, of course, he wrote the screenplay for the movie, and it shows!) Pada suatu hari, banyak mobil yang naik ke atas gunung tersebut, dan menimbulkan kehebohan di kota kecil ini. It follows Dylan the only male resident of the Welsh village of Manod and how the moving of paintings from the London's National Gallery into the quarry of the mountain in the town, leads to an attempted heist.This book was quite similar in feel to Millions. It seemed obvious to me that he is not himself Welsh, by the idiolect that he gave the protaganist (Dylan). He seemed to speak like an English boy! But that was a tiny issue in an otherwise wonderful tale. They've done it by choosing an important moment in the story so you can figure out what has just happened or guess what's going to happen next. Or the stories are full of symbols that tell you who somebody is or costumes and emblems and allegories so that you can work out what the story is – there's like a code in each picture. He has also created a fantastic trilogy, writtenwith his trademark wit, warmth and sense of story, based upon Ian Fleming's novel, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, comprising Chitty Chitty Bang Bang Flies Again, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and the Race Against Time and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang Over the Moon. Dylan relates many of his experiences to the Ninja Turtles, which is popular with the children (and especially with a child-like adult named Tom) in Manod. I couldn't help laughing every time Tom would say incredulously "What the shell?!" Lots of different ways but they've got one picture and it tells a story. And that's why I was particularly fascinated by the old lady because nobody knows what this story is. So she is the most interesting picture in the gallery to me because it's obviously full of story but I don't know what that story is and you can just make it up. It really puts into perspective that in some families, the kids have to help out to make money and keep their family home. The main character, Dylan, and his family live in a small village in Wales, below a mountain. They own a car shop there. The people are moving out of town, so they're losing business. Dylan had to give some stuff up and help the family be able to keep the shop.
