I think the most important thing is that we stop debating, and instead build agreement on a plan of action, and then implement it. Having waded through clinical environments for years and years, it’s really hard to imagine a 180 like this, but I’m open to being wrong about that. That would be terrific. But for some reason, I just cannot see this occuring. It would shake the foundation of the entire industry to realize that “observations” are, in reality, merely projections of self–each and every time. I still know that Sami Timimi and his co-authors are correct, “Autism does not exist”. But the French Psychoanalytic approach is still a big step up from the American interpretation. The greatest cruelty that can be inflicted on children is to refuse to let them express their anger and suffering except at the risk of losing their parents’ love and affection.” In truth, “for your own good” is most often code that translates to “for my own good.” (FMOG) In other words:

The first and most important thing anyone for who really wants to help is to start from the awareness that we don’t actually know ANYTHING about the other person except what we observe and what they tell us. Humility is the beginning of wisdom! There is bass and cleft, patterns and empty space, there are chords and single notes, there are various beats and breaths. One can categorize but only for simplicity sake. To be a great work one does not have to come from anyplace or anywhere and even childre’s songs and lullabies have their own special place and magic. Where possible, give someone else credit for at least part of the idea. Politicians and other leaders use a variant of that: "I couldn't have done it without my team." PacificDawn, Thanks! I’m not familiar with Alice Miller’s work. Thanks for outlining so much of your perspective, and that of so many others with whom I’ve not previously been familiar! So you can get drugs on the street. Or you can get drugs from the Mental Health System. But none of these do anything to restore your social and civil standing.Listening to Alex Plank’s speeches, I would say that his primary message is just that this ~neurological difference~ is absolute objective reality and that there is no way of challenging it and that you hence must accept it. During the 5-hour emergency room waiting period I endured (after all my things had been taken away and my heart rate/blood pressure were through the roof, so they tried to subdue me with 2 Adavan), I was pressured to sign a consent form to be admitted to their psych ward on a “voluntary” basis. To be completely honest, when I first saw videos of Alex Plank making these kinds of speeches, I thought to myself, “Nerdy Kid”. Paternalism may also be warranted in situations in which, because of our shortsightedness, impulsiveness, or carelessness, we would want to have our freedom restricted, especially when dangerous and irreversible consequences are involved. Not all of our decisions are considered, careful decisions that take into account our long-run welfare. A motorcyclist who refuses to wear a helmet will be more likely to wear one after an accident. Here paternalism is justified to protect a person's future self from the shortsighted or foolish choices of his or her earlier self.

I’m sorry your parents were so terrible, PacificDawn. Your research is compelling. I agree, “For Your Own Good always means for my own good, otherwise there would be no reason to say it.” I never said that to my kids. I also never told my children, “because I say so.” Which is another BS phrase bad parents, who do not actually have their children’s best interest at heart, use. But I absolutely agree, the psychologists and psychiatrists “see nothing wrong with child exploitation.” Covering up all forms of child exploitation, including child rape, is the primary actual societal function of our “mental health” industries, and apparently has been for over a century. Because I interact with various folks with a different set of life experiences than I , but once I was like them in the time before my internment in MH world I struggle to find vocabulary words. At issue in the controversy over the helmet law is the problem of paternalism. Paternalism can be defined as interfering with a person's freedom for his or her own good. The word calls to mind the image of a father ("pater" in Latin) who makes decisions for his children rather than letting them make their own decisions, on the grounds that "father knows best." The principle of paternalism underlies a wide range of laws, practices, and actions„ a physician who decides what is best for a patient, a sign prohibiting swimming without a lifeguard on duty, laws against voluntary euthanasia, laws restricting the use of heroine, cocaine, marijuana and other drugs, compulsory retirement savings plans, and mandatory seat belt laws„all designed to protect our interests, whether we like it or not. This Alex Plank and the guy behind him John Elder Robison, are really creepy. It is entirely a political position, people who need the Autism-Asperger’s label to exonerate perpetrators and to sustain the self-reliance ethic. For my own good, because this situation feels uncomfortable and risky, and I don’t know how to sit with that.”

It means we are too much of a certain characteristic - in your example it is politeness. We are too polite. We are so polite that it can cause us problems. A lot of the abolitionists worked the Underground Railroad before slavery was finally outlawed. We need a similar support system to help people being destroyed by psychiatry. And that real issue is restoring social and civil standing for the survivors, they come in many forms, of the Middle-Class Family and the closely associated Self-Reliance Ethic. The one being observed has his or her own reality (feelings, beliefs, judgments), to which they–and all of us–are entitled. If it does not match what is being observed, then the observer would more than likely be missing important information, which they may or may not ever receive. That would completely depend on what the person being observed is willing to share or reveal, or not. Transparency is a choice. Trying to fill in the blanks with speculation (projections) and taking action based on that is what I would consider to be really unfair to a person, and moreover, extremely violating. To me, this is the essence of injustice. In Fullmetal Alchemist (2003) anime, this is basically Hohenheim's excuse for leaving his family: because of his immortality, his body is slowly rotting away and he didn't want his family finding out. There's also the matter of Dante and the Homunculi keeping tabs on him.SpongeBob SquarePants: In "Frankendoodle", SpongeBob says this verbatim when erasing DoodleBob to stop him from rampaging across Bikini Bottom. The FYOG in these sentiments is often more implied than explicitly stated, yet there it is. And that second brand of ‘for your own good’ can be especially painful. At least when we knowingly go forth into battle with our enemies, we can prepare, mental shields raised in expectation. But, when we approach our self-proclaimed allies with our soft spots showing and they thrust the sword in, it hurts all the more. It also more than fairly qualifies as “providersplaining.” For your own good” even bleeds invisibly into the ways we use language. That comes in two different flavors: Hostile and ally. For example:

But, I won’t because I don’t have anything to prove to YOU, PacificDawn. Thanks so much for your empathy. I hope YOU are in good standing wherever YOU are. It can’t be that bad if you can be a keyboard warrior somewhere, judging somebody like me who is one of but millions of people who’ve been through this situation as I’ve uncovered looking for sources of information, hoping especially that someone can empathize in a situation where one feels frightened, abandoned, and alone because what happened to me (and all those others out there) is scary. But they still turn the experience of injustice into a case needing self improvement, not redress and retribution. They convert your pain of being marginalized and being at risk, into some need of “healing”, instead of the need of restoring your public honor.Covering up child exploitation is a multibillion dollar a year business for today’s iatrogenic illness creating, scientifically “invalid” and “unreliable,” so called “mental health professionals,” and our largely religious owned hospitals. When used as a warning or a threat, it can be taken quite literally. "You talk too much for your own good." Meaning that someone has a big mouth that will end up getting them into trouble or a fight/confrontation of some kind. In many Conversion Bureau spin-off fics the Equestrians see their Assimilation Plot as noble and good because Humans Are the Real Monsters. The PER take it further by forcibly ponifying people under the pretense of "saving" them, whether they want it or not. It's pretty easy to see why detractors of the TCB Universe compare the ponies in these fics to conquistadors or Nazis.
