Saker once was one of them, until he met Sinter, and realised that the Clan was working for evil, rather than good. He is realistic about the destruction of ocean life. There are half the number of fish swimming in our seas today than when he was born. During his lifetime alone we have taken at least 5bn sharks from the oceans, most so that their fins end up in soup. But he finds hope in the young people he meets through his work. “It would be totally wrong for me just to say, ‘Oh leave it to the youngsters, they’ll sort it out,’ but I don’t think that is what’s happening,” he says. It all began after a rainy-day visit with his family to an exhibition of artefacts from Papua New Guinea. From that moment on the seven-year-old boy was captivated: he knew this was somewhere he needed to go, this was a place he needed to explore. He has published several books, Venom, Deadly 60, The Wildlife Adventurer’s Guide, and Looking For Adventure. His fiction novel, Tiger Warswas the first in a series of four adventure stories, which was published in May 2012. He has also completed a 23 date UK tour throughout June and July 2012 promoting 'Tiger Wars'. Steve's 2015 Wild World Tourbegins in November.

In 2003, Steve moved to the BBC’s Natural History Unit, where he took his place on the long running children’s wildlife programme ‘The Really Wild Show’. The following three years were awash with wildlife highlights; sharing a beach with 75,000 nesting olive ridley turtles, having a baby mountain gorilla take him by the hand and having a red-eyed tree frog leap into his face. Steve also took part in a brutal caving expedition opening up new passage in Mageni Cave in New Britain. He wouldn’t try filming “on the fly” like this in the Arctic: “If you don’t find the polar bear or the narwhal you’re stuffed. But if you go to a rainforest and don’t find the harpy eagle, you know you’ll find the poison dart frog.”
