It seemed strange at first that a family grieving for the suicide of the eldest son would sometimes make glib references to suicide, until Farrer placed it within context of his family’s linguistics: ‘We use the language of death and suicide flippantly, like it doesn’t scare us. If we took it seriously, we might have to stop and think of Robert and of how we were all too late to save him. So, we joke, look on the bright side, talk to angels, chastise each other and make light as if we’re not fearful’. Our way of speaking contains and defines us, shores us up to better deal with what life has in store for us.I read this over quite an extended period even though it's a short book, as I was working my way through a big dull sci-fi trilogy and this lent itself perfectly to small sittings, as it consists of a series of essays that whilst related, can easily stand alone.
