There are two versions of the Safari Chef 2 – low pressure and high pressure. The low pressure version requires a regulator and hose which are sold separately and can be used with both standard screw-top cannisters or plugged directly into your caravan gas outlet. The Cadac Safari Camping Stove HP (High pressure) can screw directly into cannisters without a regulator, but costs a bit more to buy. The gas button protection on this stove ensures that you do not open the gas supply without pressing the button (and then turning it), this is especially handy with small children around. In addition, the rubber feet on the bottom provide extra stability and safety as it prevents the stove from slipping. Campingaz make the Bistro. And there are lots of other brands that are nigh-on identical. There are also a lot of very cheap and potentially dangerous variants.

The unit sits on curved plastic feet. These are flimsy and we had no confidence that they’d stand up to even light use. The Party Grill has several different hot plates and ways of working – for instance you can use it as a traditional hob to heat a pan or boil water (4 mins 20s for 1 litre of water). There is a reversible BBQ grill and griddle plate and the lid can double as a wok. This means you can cover all bases on the cooking front. Even more inefficient than alcohol are the solid fuel stoves which typically use hexamine tablets. We don’t really recommend these stoves for more than novelty value, as it takes more than one tablet to even boil 1 litre of water. There’s also no way of controlling the power of the flame, so it’s a case of lifting the pan away from it to cook/boil less – not ideal! The first bottle costs more because you pay a ‘rental’ fee for the container. After that, it’s cheaper because you’re only paying for gas. Add the chunkier vegetables that will take more cooking and cook till they’re losing a bit of their crispness. Choosing Cadac is best for your outdoor adventure if you’d like variety with a durability guarantee of 2-5 years. There are many cooking surfaces you can get and attach to your Cadac to whip up a delicious combo.They have the big advantage of being refillable. You don’t refill them yourself, though. You take the empty bottle to a store and they swap it for a full one. There’s a Party Grill 400and 600that run on refillable gas bottles, plus there’s a 200and a 400CVthat use CV470 canisters. Pan support issue or not, Jim is sceptical of the construction – “a thin-walled gas canister, lying on its side, a couple of inches from the burner – and with no real leakproof method of connection other than the can being pushed against a seal by a piece of bent tin”. Don’t let its size deceive you, the 2-Cook knows no limits. Comfortably catering from anywhere between 2 to 4 people, this versatile BBQ comes with two pot stands.
