About this deal

Laura's dying father is on his deathbed when he begs her to take care of Sarah, an unknown woman in a nursing home. Laura is confused, but grants him his dying wish. Upon investigation, Laura discovers the woman has alzheimers and only remembers things from long ago. Who is she? What's her story? How does she connect with Laura's father? Laura's husband pleads with her to stay away from the woman . . . and when she refuses, she comes home to find her husband has committed suicide leaving her young daughter alone in the house with his body. Little Emma refuses to speak again. He thought that was the best thing to do – to avoid what he perceived to be the double shame of firstly being sexually abused, and secondly being a male victim. And the interesting thing? I had the pictures for around a month. No one came to get them. No commander asked about them, no intelligence officer took them. I realised it was all for nothing. It was just to be there. It was like a game.

In 2022- 2023, Breaking the Silence, alongside Ir Amim and Combatants for Peace, was an implementing partner on a €300,000 project for “ Educating for Change: Reinforcing Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law in The Occupied Palestinian Territory Through Sector Wide Human Rights Education .” DISCLOSURE: I listened to the audiobook version of Breaking the Silence by Diane Chamberlain, narrated by Justine Eyre, published by Tantor Audio via OverDrive. All opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own personal opinions. I have read two other books by this author and they were quite intense. I did shed a tear or two reading this one. Hit a bit close to home for me. I had issues with the 'bad guys' in the story. I have no trouble in believing that the experimentation happened, or that the doctors are sometimes madder than the patients. That I know for a fact. But I don't believe that they would have been as lenient on Sarah's family as they were, and that slightly spoiled the read for me. I guess I expected something a little harder hitting from this author. Many of the details that have been published recently about Israeli NGO Breaking the Silence, its funding, and activities are incomplete and inaccurate.

She leaned close to hear him. From that angle, she could see the stars of Aries through the hospital window. "Don't try to speak, Dad." She smoothed a tuft of white hair away from his temple. Whenever I want to immerse myself into a character driven book, Diane Chamberlain is my go to girl and once again she didn't disappoint. His sentiments are reflected by the Israeli novelist and playwright AB Yehoshua, who gets on the stage to read a comment piece he had written the day before to mark the event. "The great danger to Israeli society," Yehoshua explains, "is the danger of weariness and repression. We no longer have the energy and patience to hear about another act of injustice." After he listened to the accounts of Virginia Roberts Giuffre and others he became set on writing a book: Breaking The Silence: Stories from Survivors of Sexual Abuse.

Saros praeities istorijos man pasirodė labai žiaurios ir sukrečiančios, tačiau būtent jos pridavė knygai tą didžiulį bei įspūdingą efektą. Na, o Emos nekalbėjimas parodė tai, kad kartais mes patys kaltiname save už tai, dėl ko taip neturėtume jaustis, nes nesame kalti. In October 2021, Breaking the Silence was a signatory on a statement referring to the designations as a “ draconian measure that criminalizes critical human rights work .” In May 2015, NGO Monitor revealed that following the 2009 Gaza conflict, several BtS donors conditioned the transfer of money to the group on its ability to gather a minimum number of incriminating “testimonies” against the Israeli army.

Many suffer in silence for a long time afterwards, with seven out of eight people abused in childhood not disclosing their experience until later in life.

It is not only word of mouth that produces Breaking the Silence's interviews. At the annual conferences that soldiers leaving the army attend to prepare them for the return to civilian life, researchers will try to talk to soldiers outside. Shaul explains why he and his colleagues have dedicated themselves to this project, why he believes it is as necessary today as when he first spoke out a decade ago about his own experience as a soldier in Hebron. "In Israeli politics today the occupation is absent. It's not an issue for the public. It has become normal – not second nature; the occupation has become part of our nature. The object of events like today is for us to occupy the public space with the occupation." Although one significant secret in this many-layered novel will fail to surprise readers, the brisk, atmospherically evocative narrative is absorbing reading. On one hand we have a moving tale of a daughter carrying out her father's dying wish that she look after and visit an elderly lady with dementia. On the other hand we have a story set in St Margaret's psychiatric hospital; a story of medical experimentation, bullying and government cover ups. When it all came out I was told not to say anything. I kept it a secret. I didn’t tell anyone. I was just a kid living through school life.” Hidden epidemicBased on financial information submitted to the Israeli Registrar of Non-Profits, in accordance with the Israeli NGO transparency law, Breaking the Silence received NIS 40,382,403 from foreign governmental bodies in 2012-2022.
