Bad Sister is written and constructed moderately well. Paired with Lucey's playful Sunday comics-style illustrations, the story takes a resonant dive into the insular world of children – especially siblings. However, some of the actions that the parents take are rather questionable – even in their day and time. Jess, Natalie and Teresa are sisters from a dysfunctional household that never really dealt with a tragedy earlier in life. The family members develop their own coping mechanisms to avoid dealing with the tragedy, secrets and lies. Their mother turns to alcohol and drugs which leaves the girls isolated from her support and their questions remain unanswered. Again, the blurb spoils parts of the book that’s pretty far in, so that’s also, a thing to be aware of.

The thing about being an older sibling is that you dont' realize how much you can hurt your younger brother or sister. I was a middle child, and while I dont' think my brothers ever cared if I got hurt or not, I certainly cared if I injured my younger sister. I was a little confused by this book at first. I had expected to reading Stephanie's story but was surprised to learn that most of the story is told around Connie. Not that this was a bad thing, just unexpected.
