I tap the glass gently. The silver fish gather round my fingertip like they’re trying to eat it. I wish Ben was here now. It was more fun with him than with this lot on a school trip. I absolutely loved the relationships in this novel. We have a very complex family dynamic going on for both protagonists which completely juxtapose each other. Alex has a strong bond with his little sister, Lizzie who is absolutely adorable and the writer was capable of successfully capturing that element of annoyance that all kids have which made her feel incredibly authentic. Like Alex, Dan’s life is not straight forward either. Since his older brother left home, everything in Dan’s world feels different. Dan plays out his frustrations at school, messing around in class and finding easy targets at school to bully with his friends. You two get a move on, and Dan, you stand still.’ Mr Francis bends down so his head is level with mine. Two pufferfish swim behind him.I’ll just have one last wash before I go. I rub my hands together; they sting and they’re red-raw like a pomegranate. This is such an important story. It's easy to have compassion for Alex, but this also helps the reader have compassion for Dan. Yes, he's a jerk. But there's so much going on with his life that it's easy to understand why he's so awful. (Also, he gets better and I'm a huge fan of personal growth.) Dan is set up as a secondary protagonist, and the reader is supposed to sympathize with him because his older brother is in juvenile detention for stealing a car and robbing a store. Dan bullies Alex because Dan hangs out with bullies at school, bullies who aren't really friends to him, either. While Dan is a fully fleshed-out character in this story, the other bullies - the Georges and Sophia - are just random evil flat characters. It was a completely heartbreaking book for the most part since it was difficult to read about Alex and his struggles with OCD and the bullying. Thankfully, I've never really been bullied, not like Alex, but there so was something so painfully real about the way it was written. Rich and strange (and kitted out with an eye-catching cover), but stronger in the set pieces than the internal logic.

A moving and beautifully written story about what can happen when two completely different boys are forced to put aside their differences, for fans of Wonder . I really loved how this book ended. I'm not going to say too much here, other than I was satisfied. Alex is struggling. His severe OCD makes it hard for him to leave the house, especially when Dan and his gang are waiting for him at school . . .

One of the very few cases where I liked the film so much better than the book. It took Tim Burton to make an ultimately shallow character who tells unbelievable stories to escape the inevitability of his own death into a quirky, humorous, tragic character. Read more We get to see Dan's side of the story, though, and we do end up feeling for Dan too. Dan has issues and he has reasons - or so he thinks - for bullying. Dan is angry. Nothing has been the same since his big brother left, and he’s taking it out on the nearest and weakest target: Alex. A timely story of courage and reminder of what we all share' Christopher Edge, author of The Many Worlds of Albie Bright Consequently, Dan’s aggression and annoyance is taken out on the vulnerable target in his year group: Alex.
