About this deal

Do you know any kids who are being pressured (or threatened) by family members or others into doing things they know are wrong? Is there anything you can do to help? When I was working on this prayer, I thought a lot about the night Jesus was born, and how nobody wanted to make any room for him, and how he had to be born in a stable,” I said. “So now I’m wondering if maybe we could learn something from that. I’m hoping we can all make room for Gabe. Like in our hearts. And in our prayers.”

If you have read the other two books in this series, this book is a disappointment. There really wasn't a mystery to solve and it felt very rushed. There's a substory about Alex being sued by the family of a man he possibly shoved and put in a coma (Alex says he slipped). I have no idea if this is part of a story from the Alex Cross books, but it won't matter to MG readers because it's explained well enough for them without requiring them to have read another book. What I really enjoyed about this novel was that it was a very believable and plausible mystery in which the adult (Alex Cross) also gets a POV and is involved in solving the mystery of Ali's missing friend and the string of break-and-enters in their neighbourhood (because if I'm being honest, most middle-grade mysteries are pretty far-fetched).No. 3 in this series, this episode explores the very real tension between police and the communities they serve. Many police officers misuse their authority and also judge-before-they-know, resulting in shootings of people, often those who are innocent of any crime.

Ali Cross Series by James Patterson - Goodreads

Ali Cross, son of Alex Cross has recently solved two big Police Cases and the taste of adventure has whetted his appetite for more. Every family has one child that goes against the norm, like Ali, I was that child, and I wanted to know more. I was the child who searched through documents and asked questions the elders thought their meager explanations should satisfy. Following in my footsteps is my niece, we are the two people in our family that know the most concerning family secrets, and total truths. While we may have aggravated our elders, we really never put ourselves in danger, which is what Ali Cross always manages to do.

So I’ll see you tonight at seven,” I’d said. The plan was to get online with our usual crew and start a marathon session of Outpost, our favorite game. It’s supposed to be a big deal to get chosen for the children’s prayer at my church, especially on Christmas Eve. I guess you could say it was an honor. But my mind was like mush that night, and I was wishing they’d tapped someone else. In the meantime, I couldn’t stop thinking about Gabe. Couldn’t stop wondering what had happened to him. Couldn’t stop a whole lot of really bad thoughts from passing through my brain, like one scary movie after another.
