Given the chance to go to Scotland, Masataka enrolled at the University of Glasgow and became the first Japanese ever to study the art of whisky making. He took chemistry courses at the university and apprenticed at distilleries, learning first-hand from craftsmen and training as a blender — he would later become known as a master blender. The Yamazaki 12 is the closest competition to Yoichi NAS from Yamazaki. It’s a much fruitier and softer whisky. And Yoichi is noticeably peaty, whereas Yamazaki is not.

A distillery tour pamphlet will be distributed to visitors upon arrival. Visitors may tour the facilities freely at their own pace while referring to the guide map inside the pamphlet. Suntory would eventually launch the Hakushu Distillery in Yamanashi. This facility was designed to produce whiskies with more peat and Scotch-like character. So they’re more similar to Yoichi than Yamazaki. Like Yoichi, Hakushu also utilizes a lot of used Bourbon casks. But overall, Yoichi is more firm, savory, robust, and peaty. Whereas, Hakushu is more crisp, mineral, and apply.There are two types of tours available at the Yoichi distillery – Guided and Self-Guided. Both types of guide are free of charge. Because this is a factory that produces beverages for consumption, for sanitary reasons we ask that you refrain from bringing in food or pets. Smoke levels are higher than I expected and rather pleasant at the same time - a combination of salty coastal smoke and seaweed with elements drawn further inland – woody, earthy and vegetal. Dry fires meets wet fires. A few drops of water heightens sweetness and adds a touch of orange peels alongside some homemade lemonade.
