About this deal

The 10G RJ45 SFP+ module is widely used in 10 Gigabit Ethernet, typically for data center interconnect (DCI) between a switch and NIC. We know that the fiber 10G SFP+ transceivers, and high-speed cables can also achieve 10GbE DCI connectivity. Given that 10G transmission over copper link has the cons of higher latency, more power consumption, and short reach limitations than optical link, some may ask: what's the purpose of the 10GBASE-T SFP+ copper module? The Cisco 1-Gbps SFPs are supported across a variety of Cisco networking equipment *. For more details, refer to the document SFP Compatibility Matrix at: https://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/interfaces_modules/transceiver_modules/compatibility/matrix/OL_6981.pdf A more cost-effective solution than replacing 10G SFP+ switches with 10GBASE-T RJ45 switches; A stabler solution than 10G SFP+ to RJ45 media converters. Both 10G fiber SFP+ and 10G copper SFP+ are 10G transceiver modules with an SFP+ form factor. What sets them apart is that the former uses an optical fiber connector whereas the latter uses an electrical RJ45 connector. Accordingly, 10GBASE-T SFP+ relies on copper twisted pair cables as transmission medium rather than fiber cables. For instance, the max transmission distance of SFP-10G-T-S SFP+ to RJ45 transceiver is 30m over Cat6a or Cat7 cable. The market has also seen a max transmission distance of 80m for an enhanced model SFP-10G-T-80. The 10G-T module is compliant with SFF-8431 and SFF-8432 MSA, featuring low power consumption, high performance, and compact design. An SFP module will typically present itself as a little box that you insert into a switch or router. You then connect fibre or copper cables to the SFP module using one of the standard connectors.

Ethernet (like DOCSIS) outlines the signals and cable requirements, but it also outlines options for the connectors used.A GLC-BX40-D-I or GLC-BX40-DA-I device connects to a GLC-BX40-U-I device with a single strand of standard SMF with an operating transmission range up to 40 km. The Cisco 10GBASE-ER Industrial Temperature Module supports a link length of up to 40 kilometers on standard Single-Mode Fiber (SMF, G.652). The SFP-10G-ER-I for Industrial Operating Temperature Range is a multirate 10GBASE-ER, 10GBASE-EW and OTU2/2e module.

An SFP - Small Form-factor Pluggable Transceiver - is just a little device that converts a standard set of signals to another standard set of signals. They often convert to fibre Ethernet connections, but can equally provide copper Ethernet or even direct SFP-SFP connections. Cisco quality Identification (ID) feature enables a Cisco platform to identify whether the module is certified and tested by Cisco The communication over a single strand of fiber is achieved by separating the transmission wavelength of the two devices. SFP-10G-BX40D-I transmits a 1330-nm channel and receives a 1270-nm signal. The SFP-10G-BX40U-I transmits at a 1270-nm wavelength and receives a 1330-nm signal. Information about Cisco’s environmental sustainability policies and initiatives for our products, solutions, operations, and extended operations or supply chain is provided in the “Environment Sustainability” section of Cisco’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Report. In summary, SFP, DOCSIS, and Ethernet are all standards for transmitting data over a physical medium. The standards will often dictate physical aspects of the interface - for example SFP specifies the size and shape of a module, while DOCSIS and Ethernet specify the requirements of the cable.

Twisted-pair cables consist of two conductors of a single circuit twisted together, which reduce the effects of EMI and mutual interference between pairs and improve electromagnetic compatibility. Nowadays the cables are shielded with aluminum foil to increase protection against crosstalk on neighboring lines. There are Cat5e, Cat6, Cat6a, Cat7, Cat8 Ethernet cables that can be used in your network solution. And this 10Gb copper SFP+ solution can be paired with Cat6a/Cat7 or Better for a transmission distance of 80m. Latency The fiber world uses a dizzying array of different standards, so pluggable transervers are the norm there. The copper world on the other hand mostly uses fixed transcievers. From time to time though it is desirable to connect a copper connection to a SFP port, so 100BASE-T SFP transcievers are made. The GLC-GE-DR-LX SFP can interoperate with other 100M SFPs/interfaces as long as those are based on 100BASE-LX10 standard. A 5dB attenuator is needed on the path of dual-rate SFP Tx and 100BASE-LX10 interface Rx. No attenuator is needed on the other fiber strand. The Cisco 10GBASE-LR module supports a link length of 10 kilometers on standard Single-Mode Fiber (SMF) (G.652). SFP-10G-LR-S does not support FCoE.

The Cisco 10GBASE-ZR module supports link lengths of up to about 80 kilometers on standard SMF (G.652). This interface is not specified as part of the 10 Gigabit Ethernet standards and is, instead, built according to Cisco specifications. SFP-10G-ZR-S does not support FCoE. The Cisco 10GBASE-ER Module supports a link length of up to 40 kilometers on standard Single-Mode Fiber (SMF, G.652). The dual-rate 100M/1G 10Km SFP is interoperable with the IEEE 100BASE-LX and 1000BASE-LX/LH standards. For S-Class SFP+ 10 Gigabit Modules, refer to the link below: https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/products/interfaces-modules/transceiver-modules/datasheet-listing.html. A GLC-BX80-D-I device is always connected to a GLC-BX80-U-I device with a single strand of standard SMF with an operating transmission range up to 80 km.
