For example, some learners get better results by listening and copying the pronunciation. Some people are good at this, but there are others who can’t do it well. You will be able to generate the audio of your text using a selection of high-quality text-to-speech voices. These small books have colorful illustrations and they tell a real story that will grab your child’s interest. The first set of easy phonics readers focuses on short vowels and consonant blends. I love that you can pair it with the corresponding DVD. Kids often learn so much better when they have an engaging visual.

This phonetic translator will help you obtain very accurate phonetic transcription of your English text. A Beka Phonics Readers start very slow, and they only introduce six sounds at once. These are perfect for readers just starting out. The text is large and accessible for the youngest readers. For example, the Little Books your child can sound out: Do you have any other tips for using IPA to improve your English pronunciation? Please let us know in the comments! The Very First Reading Set from Usborne includes shared reading for an adult and child to enjoy a fun story together. The first book, Pirate Pat, uses only 8 letters to create the sentences that your child will read. And each book adds more letters to create more words to sound out together. It can take until Year 2/Primary 3 before your child might have learned all 44 sounds in English and the many different spellings used for each sound. Why ‘at least?’ It’s because there isn’t one way to pronounce English, and so there’s more than one way to write English in IPA.

I also like that one book spans from simple words and short sentences to much more complicated text with paragraphs and multi-syllable words. You will get access to video recordings of native speakers slowly pronouncing the most popular words. Another resource that you may consider are the First Phonics Readers from Wildflower Ramblings. I created these readers for my son who struggles to sound out three letters together (h – a – t), but can understand and synthesize two letters being sounded out together (h – a). I have no idea why this works, but it just does. Keep a piece of white paper or a mini white board(kids love them!) handy while reading together. When your kid stumbles over a word, it will help to write the word bigger and then mark it up and break it down phonetically with your child. This phonetic translator has a built-in English dictionary, WordNet. It contains more than 140,000 English words. This is an excellent resource within the classroom or to share with parents for effective at-home learning!
