About this deal

As mentioned above, while teleconverters are typically made to work with more than one lens, there are no teleconverters on the market that work with every lens. Both Nikon and Canon have rather small lists of lenses (compared to the overall lens line) that are compatible with their teleconverters for a reason – most lenses are not designed to couple with teleconverters. Here’s an example of the Nikon Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S at 70mm, where it has low levels of chromatic aberration – around 1 pixel at all apertures (shown in blue in the chart below). Chromatic aberration measurements from the 1.4x TC are in red, and the 2.0x TC measurements are in green:

AF NIKKOR lenses (those which do not have a built-in focus motor) are not compatible with the current AF-S teleconverters but may work with older manual models. (AF-S lenses are those with a built-in focus motor.) Some of the newer NIKKOR lenses can also be used with older manual focus teleconverters with limited compatibility. Functional limitations include having to manually focus the lens, shoot in manual exposure mode only, and require an accessory exposure meter due to the camera’s built-in exposure meter being rendered inactive. Vignetting or other visible image defects may also occur. Thank you for what is, by a long way, the most comprehensive and informative article I’ve seen on teleconverters. However, I think it could be even better with more reference to sensor pixel densities. I see that many of the shots illustrating the article were taken on 12 MPx cameras. I’ve tested four copies of both Nikon Z teleconverters, including three copies of each teleconverter in the lab with Imatest data. (You’ll see more on that in the “Sample Variation” section later in the review.) On top of that, our team at Photography Life has tested both teleconverters on every compatible Nikon Z lens aside from the 600mm f/4 TC VR S. I’ll do my best to get to the bottom of all your questions based on this extensive testing. Nikon Z Teleconverter Specifications It won't work with older screw-type AF lenses; they'll be manual focus only, and it won't meter with any lens with an aperture ring.Keep all of this firmly in mind as you browse our guide to the best teleconverters, and decide which is the best option for your camera and lenses. We've split our guide into sections for each lens mount to help you find teleconverters to fit your system. Canon EF mount teleconverters It's a mild 1.4× teleconverter so it doesn't have any difference in practical image quality or autofocus speed, but on the other hand it doesn't give much more reach, either.

Same result here – it seems like the TC-14E III does not do better compared to its predecessor on this lens. With less than 1.5% difference in sharpness, it practically brings no benefit. Conclusion Like I pointed out above, forget about trying to get this teleconverter to focus on Nikkor lenses. On Sigma lenses, however, it is a whole different story – autofocus operation is fully maintained and the teleconverter does not seem to negatively impact the AF speed of the Sigma 120-300mm f/2.8, which is good news. Accuracy also does not seem to be impacted, although mileage might vary from lens to lens. Obviously, AF performance and accuracy will surely suffer on slower lenses, with fast lenses being the best candidates to be used with the extender. Sharpness, Contrast and Color Rendition The Sigma 1.4x Tele-Converter (TC-1401) magnifies the focal length of lenses by 1.4 times. The converter features SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass elements that offer excellent aberration correction, boasts a durable construction and is dust and splash-proof.
