Why is it important to teach Natural Forms in Art Classes?

Although we can all step outside and study rose pedals and the intricate details of a leaf with our own eyes, we can discover a whole different feeling or detail in an artists’ perception of the very same subjects. Numerous artists from the past have focused their art work on their environment, the days’ changing lights and the nights’ play of shadows, but there are a few in particular that really stand out. Miranda Lloyd is an incredible artist who does both graphic design and traditional art. Many of her works focus on trees and animals. When viewing her trees, you will see a wide range of textures, lines, shapes, and colors. She also tends to create mixed media pieces. Anna Atkins was an English botanist and photographer. She is often considered the first person to publish a book illustrated with photographic images. Some sources say that she was the first woman to create a photograph. She is famous for her beautiful cyanotypes. You can read more about using cyanotypes in the art classroom here.
