Too much will reduce the bird’s appetite for the layers pellets and they may not get enough protein, minerals and vitamins. Eggs may be presented for human consumption during treatment when used as directed, but birds should not be slaughtered for human consumption until 7 days after the end of treatment. Sodium bicarbonate (just the same as baking powder!) is another source of digestible sodium which is essential for a healthy bird. Your birds will need to eat the medicated pellets for 7 consecutive days. On average a bird will eat a kilo a week. The yolk colouring pigments added to Country Layers are Citrazanaxathin which occurs naturally in the skins of oranges and Lutein and Zeaxanthin which are produced from marigold petals. Methionine occurs naturally at high levels in certain vegetables and seeds and Heygates carefully monitor the formulations of their layers diets to make sure that the levels are correct. To give an attractive yolk colour, pigments extracted from marigold petals are added together with another compound which occurs naturally in the skins of oranges.
