About this deal

The Giro Tyrant is a well thought out half-face for some serious, gravity-fed riding. It can get a little hot compared to proper half-face lids but it's comfy, great in winter and a particularly good choice for downhill laps on e-bikes, where the weight and heat retention are much smaller problems. One such technology is MIPS (multi-directional impact protection system), which uses a floating plastic liner between the head and the EPS structure, which reduces the amount of rotational force transmitted to the brain during a crash. This revolutionary fit system adds a new dimension to helmet performance by enhancing cooling, as well as fit comfort

Price Matches may only be honored on identical items. The product must be the same make and model (i.e., the same size, color, year, etc.). While the impact resistance of helmets is covered by a number of test standards to ensure they perform when they’re needed, manufacturers have been introducing extra technology to try to improve on this. Created for riders who don’t define themselves by one MTB discipline, the Tyrant MTB Helmet (MIPS) offers incredible levels of protection, amazing comfort and wraps it up in a distinctive design. Fully goggle compatible, it sets new standards for comfort, protection and multi-discipline performance. The Specialized Camber also fared admirably against much more expensive competition during our test session. This helmet is just about as basic as you'll find on the mountain bike helmet market today, with a fixed visor, single-density EPS, and no luxury features like eyewear integration. Still, it does include MIPS, a comfortable and highly adjustable harness, and adjustable strap splitters. Additionally, it features the same high-quality construction, top-of-the-line styling, and five-star Virginia Tech protection rating as its more expensive counterpart, the Ambush 2, for a startlingly low price. The Tyrant fits similarly to other Giro offerings and the sizing is right on. I have a 56cm head and the medium was perfect. The large visor is able to move up and out of the way when wearing googles on the really cold days but the helmet still fits well with any of the larger aspect glasses such as the Oakley Sutro. The Hardbody shell wraps from the outside of the helmet to the inside, giving a significant boost to durability compared to regular helmets. The in-mould construction sees a tough polycarbonate outer shell fused directly with the helmet’s impact-absorbing foam liner. This in-mould fusion process allows Giro to optimise ventilation without compromising protection, so in-mould helmets can be both lighter and cooler than traditional helmets. With styling reminiscent of the Switchblade and Chronicle helmets, the Tyrant also gets an adjustable visor with loads of coverage. You can adjust the visors’ two anchor points with a 4mm hex key, though moulded grooves mean you can simply use your hands to perform the same job.

Certification:• Complies with the US CPSC safety standard for bicycle helmet for persons age 5 and older Most bike helmets use some form of expanded polystyrene, or EPS foam, formed around a core of another, tougher material to provide cushioning in the event of an impact. We majorly appreciated the extra coverage and protection of the Tyrant when things got rowdy, but it also comes with a weight penalty. This model is far heavier than your standard half-shell trail helmet. It doesn't make you feel like a bobblehead like some of the heavier full-face helmets out there, but you'll undoubtedly notice it has more heft than your average lid. Given the intended purpose of this helmet, we don't think the extra weight is a major issue. The Tyrant is perfect for having fun on the trails and testing your limits with the peace of mind provided by the protection from added coverage. Still, you may also prefer the lighter weight and ventilation the protective Kortal Race MIPS offers. Our first ride wearing the Tyrant, suitably, was while we were snapping some photos and filming a bit of riding. While we can see the appeal for that kind of thing as well as hang out sessions, the helmet does run a bit on the warm side. It’s probably not the best choice for huge rides on hot summer days, but alas – that’s not what Giro is marketing it toward. Anyhow, the comfort is top rate with plush padding, accurate sizing and excellent coverage. If you wish to return your bike to us please keep it in the box it arrived in and call us on 01772 644340 and we will arrange a collection.

Giro Tyrant Helmet Features

The P. O. V. Plus Visor has an adjustment mechanism that allows the visor to be adjusted up and down in 3 steps. In addition, the visor can be pushed up so far that the goggle can be pushed onto the helmet during a break, for example. The adjustment is easy to make with one hand and while driving. The wide brow ensures a smooth fit with goggles. The look is a lot more tolerable than usual for an open-face helmet/goggle combo. What do you think? Two plastic stubs can be anchored in four vertical positions, helping to position the cradle of the harness in the right spot. If possible, go to your local bike shop to see how you get on with different lids or ask your friends if you can try theirs.
