About this deal

Most high-volume document scanners like this one, including but not limited to the Epson DS-970 and DS-870 workgroup scanners, the abovementioned Raven Pro and Alaris S2060w, and Canon's ImageFormula DR-M260, are relatively close in size and girth. Like them, the fi-8170 supports basic scan setup and execution, as well as selecting predefined workflow profiles, from an onboard control panel. The latter consists of a series of buttons—Stop/Clear, Scan/Error, Menu, Manual Feed, and Power—anchored by a small rectangular display. You can set up your scans from the control panel or choose a workflow profile from the display. Fast boot time and up to 70ppm duplex mean the fi-8170 delivers a highly efficient scanning process for the ultimate in workgroup productivity. Incorporating USB 3.2 and gigabit LAN connectivity also makes rapid file transfer possible. Overscan Control

With an intuitive interface, PaperStream Capture allows users to feed information into their organization's workflow through various capture features during batch scanning effectively and efficiently. Streamline workflow with automatic functions A liquid crystal display (LCD) is included in the operator panel to display useful information including current settings for scanning documents, the number of sheets scanned, and error status. Users know the scanner status in the blink of an eye and can easily select and initiate predefined scanning profiles.

Why Choose Fujitsu Scanners?

The fi-7160 is equipped with a "Skew Reducer" to maintain the straight alignment of paper feeding. Particularly valuable for mixed document batches containing small format documents or thin paper sheets, this function reduces the physical skew of documents throughout the paper path. Even the most untidy batches are given special treatment sheet-by-sheet, which ensures total coverage for every scan: no lost data on the edges or in the corners, no more rescans. Although our timed speed fell short of its rated speed in our tests, the fi-7160 is still a fast scanner. To its credit, it didn't lose any time in scanning and saving two-sided documents over simplex. The Epson WorkForce DS-860, our Editors' Choice for moderate to heavy-duty scanning in a midsize office, and rated at a slightly faster 65ppm for simplex and 130ipm for duplex, scanned the same test file at a 54ppm/91ipm clip.

Advanced software for maximized efficiency Connect business workflow with PaperStream IP and PaperStream CaptureThe Epson DS-870 and DS-970 also have 100-sheet automatic document feeders, though their maximum daily duty cycles are 7,000 and 9,000 scans respectively. The Alaris S2060w and Canon DR-M260 each hold up to 80 sheets, with respective daily limits of 7,000 and 7,500 scans. The Raven Pro has a 100-sheet ADF, but its recommended daily limit is only 6,000 scans. The Fujitsu fi-7160 is an ADF scanner that is capable of scanning a maximum size of 216 by 5588 millimeters. Equipped with a CCD sensor, this scanner provides an optical scanning resolution of 600 by 600 DPI. White LED lights (2x) serve as the main source of illumination for the scanner. Fujitsu reps have told me more than once that their higher-end scanners like the fi-8170 operate under the assumption that the machine is likely to be deployed in an existing, high-end document management solution. But if not—if you're preparing to roll out a new document archiving application—between Fujitsu's bundled programs and available add-ons, you can create and maintain a basic solution, a sophisticated one, or anything in between. With duplex scanning speeds of 120 images per minute at 300 dpi in Color, Grayscale, and Monochrome, the fi-7160 protects your documents with acoustic sensors, ensures your data is captured with smart ultrasonic technology, and reduces rescans by cleaning up documents automatically in a single pass. Reliability is enhanced even further with new skew prevention technology for exceptional paper handling.

In document imaging and management technology, seven years is a very long shelf life, perhaps as many as two or three generations. As I said a moment ago, everything about this new model improves on its fi-7160 predecessor, and as you can see below, the fi-8170 looks nothing like the 2015 version. The Fujitsu fi-8170 (right) bears little resemblance to 2015's model fi-7160 (left). If you need your documents to show evidence of having been scanned, the optional imprinter will "stamp" the reverse side of your documents additionally providing a cross-reference from your digital files.

Our Featured Scanners

Whether the infrastructure is fixed or expanding, managing technology efficiently inside the organization is key to reducing total cost of ownership and the Fujitsu scanner provides system administrators with advanced software tools to centrally manage the scanner more productively and cost effectively.

For the record, the Epson DS-870 and Raven Pro scanners tied the Fujitsu's accuracy; the Canon DR-M260 managed 5 points error-free with Arial and 6 points with Times New Roman, while the Alaris turned in a highly respectable 6 points with both. (Again, direct comparisons with the Epson DS-970 weren't practical.) It's important to note that all these scores are better than acceptable. IT administration staff can monitor running status, update scanner drivers, software and more with this powerful software. This dramatically reduces operating costs whilst reducing the effort that organisations need to spend setting up, operating and maintaining their inventory of scanners. With these Scanner Central Administration tools, it is easier than ever to expand scanner networks to multiple remote locations. We have worked for the past 6 months on building a new review system on how we produce content. Using it, we have subsequently redone most of our articles to provide actual hands-on expertise on the guides we made.Fujitsu's PaperStream NX Manager provides built-in server software to easily integrate centralized client-server document management systems—basically, fleet management software on steroids. With duplex scanning capability, the fi-7160 scans colour A4 documents at a speed of 60 ppm / 120 ipm (all speeds A4 Portrait 200 / 300 dpi), offering unrivalled cost-performance. Where even higher throughput and productivity are required, the fi-7180 model delivers impressive speeds of 80 ppm / 160 ipm. Whether you need fast or faster scanning, these models guarantee solid performance and quality results. Hardware highlights include: Next, you should be able to see some lights on the front panel of your scanner. They should be lit up green or orange indicating that the device is receiving power and is ready for use. The fi-7160 has been introduced to support increasingly diverse business related document capture routines at the desktop of individual knowledge workers or small workgroups. Simple, productivity-boosting operation virtually eliminates training requirements, both when using the scanner for regular document management routines as well as when using latest "ScanSnap Manager for fi Series scanners" software to accomplish individual ad hoc tasks. During testing, we were impressed with PaperStream Capture and didn't have to wait long for our batch scans either. Duplex scans of 50 bank statements returned 62ppm for colour and greyscale at 200dpi and 300dpi with speed dropping to 12ppm at 600dpi.
