About this deal

The Gin Fayre presents International Scottish Gin Day 2019, which will take place in the prestigious Mansfield Traquair in the centre of Edinburgh.

The Esker distillery has won over a dozen awards for the taste of its gins including International Wine & Spirits Competition (IWSC) gold and silver awards for Esker and Esker Honey Spiced, along with Great Taste Awards. The bright, silver bark of silver birch trees makes them a notable feature across Scotland and especially across Royal Deeside where the Esker distillery is located. Silver birch is a generous tree – it’s widely spread roots bring otherwise inaccessible nutrients into the tree, which are recycled on to the soil surface when the tree sheds its leaves. It has links to Celtic mythology, symbolising renewal and purification – in Scottish Highland mythology, it is used as symbol of love.

Recipes

Aberdeen City gave rise to one of the most notable clippers to sail the seas. One of those ships, The Thermopylae was launched in 1868 and on its first trip set speed records on her way to Melbourne via Shanghai and Foochow. This vessel played a fundamental role in opening up trade routes with the Far East – and one of the key items they returned with was tea. Esker have changed the thinking behind the flavours and using silver birch sap, a feature of Royal Deeside, challenged the traditional botanicals and gin recipes. As it stands, they are the only Scottish gin to use birch sap as a botanical. The Scotsman Food and Drink have been championing Scottish gin since our inception and we are delighted to see the explosion in popularity for surely what must now be one of the world's most exciting spirits. Traditionally Pitlochry, and Perthshire as a whole, is thought of as whisky country. But having a verdant farm and the River Brerachin nearby makes it perfect for Premium small-batch Gin production.

The Queen’s former floating palace, Britannia was an ambassador for British business, promoting trade and industry around the world. This variation in types of terrain is perfect for selecting botanicals; there will be many to choose from. The advantage of having a farm on a hill is that they have a wide variety of terrain; from grassland to heatherland, and from forests to bogland. A seemingly year-long flowering spiky plant, which has cursed many a golfer’s round, gorse almost goes unnoticed through its sheer ubiquitous presence in Scotland and across the globe. Anyone who’s ever walked a country lane or through the dunes on a warm late Spring evening will be familiar with the spray of bright yellow and the incredible aroma (a little reminiscent of Hawaiian Tropic suntan oil). For Mint (other soft herbs) gently “clap” your mint sprig to release a fresh but subtle aroma over the top of your gin. How we do it….When Helen was working in distilleries she was inspired by the enthusiasm of those working in the industry and how it is all-encompassing; crafting, branding, and helping people: "It's a very creative place to be". Gin is traditionally served over ice with tonic, though some are now also taking it neat. You can drink it any way you like, we're not fussed, as long as you enjoy it! The family-run business is seemingly determined to be trail-blazing in the ever-expanding world of Scottish Premium Gin. Tiree is a fertile and remote island, famed for sunshine and stunning scenery, and is surrounded by the vast Atlantic Ocean. In the eighteenth century, the island was home to around fifty distillers with each farm on the island operating at least one still producing whisky.

This tasty looking gin has just opened its doors. For many years there has been only one gin distillery on Orkney; at the end of this year we will have three. Hrafn Gin is a premium gin that has a deeper taste, with a long lingering finish and to achieve this, the distilling process is slowed down for maximum extraction. Mandarin is one of the few citrus fruits that can take this process and still reveal the sweet citrus flavours. Mandarin was always our preferred citrus due to its sweeter nature and the test distil revealed its darker qualities that fitted our taste profile. Persie Gin is made by the hard-working partners Chrissie and Simon who also run the long-established Gin Club Scotland. Red Door Gin is carefully handcrafted at Benromach Distillery in Forres, where every drop is distilled in “Peggy” – the small copper pot behind the distillery’s iconic red door. It is also able to hold its own against the more robust botanicals, but still impart its perfume and taste delicately, when handled with care. Hrafn Gin ‘Thought & Memory’ is an award-winning London Dry gin and so needs citrus to hold true to the required taste profile and to maintain balance. Mandarin does this to perfection by being able to sit in all of the three taste registers: top, middle and bottom.”When using a twist of citrus peel such as lemon or orange, make sure you gently twist the skin over the drink or even rub the peel round the rim of your glass, this will release the fragrant oils and aromas held in the fruit’s skin.

Tiree Whisky Company Ltd was established by locals Alain Campbell and Ian Smith with the aim of reviving the spirit industry on an island with a rich heritage in the tradition. Local production of Tyree Gin began in February 2019 and, once again, the island was home to an operational distillery - the first in 217 years. It’s great to see Kirkjuvagr are investing a lot in Orkney; they are going to open an artisan distillery, visitor centre and shop on Kirkwall’s Ayre Road, the official opening is planned for next spring.

Travel

Badvo Distillery is the brainchild of Helen Stewart, an English Literature student whose family have been farming in Pitlochry for over 400 years. The sheep-farming Stewart family have a few outbuildings that are no longer in use, and they want to use them to diversify their offerings on the farm.
