On the nose, Big Peat is a powerful wave of smoky and medicinal peat intertwined with hints of the ocean breeze, iodine, and a touch of sweetness reminiscent of honey and malt. To taste, the dram unfurls layers of smoke, ash, and tar, which are balanced with subtler notes of vanilla, citrus, and a salty, maritime influence that speaks of its coastal origins. The finish is long, warming, and undeniably peaty, leaving a lingering impression that is both complex and satisfying. Laing: “No, it was only about four or five years ago that I realized this. Anybody who is fond enough of Big Peat to have a tattoo applied to his arm or leg, that’s got to be a cult-ish following. There’s even a group that call themselves Big Peat Nerds. They came across for a celebratory dinner a few months ago and flew in from all over. It’s very warming for us to see that sort of interest.” Distiller: What do you remember about the inception of Big Peat?

This particular review is based on the 4th sample provide by the Whisky Wire as part of the Big Peat Tweet Tasting. I rarely comment on colour of whisky but this one is so refreshingly pale I can’t help but assume that no caramel has been added. At first, I honestly found the label and box’s gaudy design to be somewhat off-putting and even a little garish. Admittedly, this actually caused me to refrain from buying it for myself in the first place. However, I’ve come not only to appreciate but even love the label the more I look at it.

The young components give it a pale yellow appearance. Based on the rest of the line, I had low expectations going into the Big Peat Whisky but they were happily surpassed. After a few sips, I found myself finally sinking into a whisky from this lineup. Could be the complexity the peat adds, could be the desire for something a bit more savory after all the sweet, or it could just be that this is a good whisky. All of the above is possible, but I’m leaning towards the later. Given peat’s availability (it is found worldwide, largely in the top of the northern hemisphere through North America, Russia and Northern Europe, with a very large concentration in Scotland), it made for a reliable and easily procured source of fuel before coal and other options made their way to Islay from Glasgow hundreds of years ago.

It does have a nice round mouthfeel, in which the peat and smokiness return more pronounced. Yes, this is the good stuff. A little bit of rubber, asphalt and something salty/sour that I cannot pinpoint. Kippers, maybe? Something medicinal as well.Finish: A light sour note. The flavour of the finish is medium to short, but then my tongue feels like an ash tray. 21/25 With water, the ashtray is cleaner and a little menthol on the finish. (22/25)
