Have you ever had a night out with friends, only to wake up the next day feeling sluggish and regretting those extra drinks? As someone who enjoys socializing and trying new drinks, I know that feeling all too well. That’s why I was excited to discover Three Spirit Drinks, a line of alcohol alternatives infused with adaptogens and other natural ingredients to give you a unique and health-conscious drinking experience. Of all of the Three Spirit drinks, The Livener – in my experience – has the most pronounced effects. Some of the herbal ingredients contain natural caffeine, so there’s a definite energy boost. According to Three Spirit it’s only equivalent to a cup of coffee. Let’s be honest: These are herb and plant-based drinks – not narcotics! So if you expect to be bouncing off the walls, you’re going to be disappointed. However, the effect is good and – to me – noticeable. I’m always ready to get stuff done after one of these. Before I give you a drink-by-drink rundown, a comment that I think is relevant to all of drinks in the Three Spirit range: These drinks all taste like something completely “new.” There’s certainly not one like gin, one like whisky, and so on. As Three Spirit themselves say: “they’re kind of weird…in a good way.” Give me three Social Elixir & gingers and I will start to become mischievous. Whether that’s a placebo effect at play or the magic of plants, I can’t tell you, but there’s definitely more going on in a glass of this than you’ll get from a standard 0% spirit. It also contains compounds that may improve cognitive function, memory, and overall brain health. It’s very strong and rich, with the definite throat burn that you’d get from a whisky. However, it’s also surprisingly “approachable.” After my first “sip and wince” experience, I took more time with it, letting it wash around my taste buds before slowly swallowing. It also contains antioxidants and other compounds that may have anti-inflammatory, cholesterol-lowering, and blood sugar-regulating effects. Well, thanks to guayusa, Schisandra, green tea, and guava leaf, the feeling is described as “euphoric.” We’ll bite.
A striking dark brown when poured, the opaque green bottle hides the colour of the liquid inside, giving it a certain sense of mystery. It has an intense flavour when drunk neat, with a bitter, gin-like aftertaste. It’s quite unlike any of the other teetotal spirits on the market – with a much more savoury taste. Our taste testers identified hints of liquorice, ginger, yeast and figs. If you like the sharp and earthy taste of kombucha, Three Spirit may be for you. Watermelon isn’t just in here for flavour – the L-citrullinein watermelon helps to regulate energy levels and manage blood pressure so that you don’t start to feel like you’ve over-indulged Three Spirit may be non-alcoholic, but these are no regular soft drinks or cordial! The first thing I noticed was the flavor – it had rich, complex notes of dark apple and cacao that made it a pleasure to sip on its own. But what really impressed me was the subtle lift to my mood that I felt after drinking it. The blend of adaptogens and other natural ingredients seemed to have a positive effect on my energy levels and overall sense of well-being. It’s full-bodied and bittersweet with a curious savory bite. The Social Elixir contains trace amounts of caffeine from Green Tea, Yerba Mate, and Cacao extracts, less than 6mg per serving. Social Elixir is rich and full-bodied, but it doesn’t burn or bite like a heavy duty spirit would. It’s on the savoury side of the drinks spectrum, so if you’re like me and you don’t have much of a sweet tooth, don’t be put off by the agave nectar and molasses on the ingredients list. For instance, we source our guayusa from small native farming communities in Ecuador who grow the magic caffeinated leaf under the canopy of the rainforest, meaning that their cultivation methods are in harmony with the surrounding habitat that is so very rich in flora and fauna. The dried leaves are then transported to an incredibly high tech lab in the United States where we produce a beautiful extract using methods, equipment and techniques that would never be available in the jungle. It is this balance of working with ancient plants and high-quality raw material and then finding modern techniques to get the best out of the plant for our needs. We need to be able to make it soluble, identify the flavour and functional compounds of interest and produce a consistent and safe extract that can be blended and bottled. Valerian is a powerful plant with soothing properties, helping to bring a sense of peacefulness. Hüll Melon hops are known for their antioxidant and mood-making functions. They offer a mellowing effect and provide a fresh, fruity flavour. Lemon balm is wonderfully refreshing and rejuvenating. It will help the mind replenish and aids a sound sleep. We found the Three Spirit Social Elixir to taste like a sweet tomato drink without the acidity. It was slightly bitter with hints of dark berry and savory notes. This drink is definitely bittersweet tasting.Three Spirit drinks are low in calories – especially compared to alcohol. Per serve (without mixer): After drinking a lot more of it, I do wonder how much of that effect was down to us feeling that we were having an “adult drink” for the first time in ages. I think there is some caffeine in this one too, so you get a small boost from that. It’s certainly very enjoyable to drink, and perfect for when others around you are drinking – so fun, yes, flirty? I’m still on the fence on that score!
