About this deal

The Llyn Peninsula Coastal Path is a waymarked long-distance footpath running along the coast of the Llyn Peninsula from Caernarfon to Porthmadog in Gwynedd, north-west Wales. The path opened in 2006 as part of the work to complete a walking route around the whole coast of Wales. The Llyn Peninsula Coastal Path is typical of such routes, passing through secluded coves and beaches, along cliff top paths and through small harbour villages and some larger towns. The village of Borth-y-Gest, less than a mile from the centre of Porthmadog, makes for a wonderful discovery, with its tiny but beautiful little harbour, views to the mountains and walks along the Glaslyn estuary, past this gorgeous little beach. 14. Traeth Bach, Portmeirion The Observatory Tower and Traeth Bach, Portmeirion This walk visits the Yr Eifl Quarry in the coastal village of Trefor on the Llyn Peninsula, Gwynedd. This walk uses part of the long distance trail and a section of a dismantled railway line to create a lovely circular walk around the town. This small village has been called the ‘Land’s End of North Wales’, and it does have a remote, isolated feel.

Aberdesach Beach Aberdesach Beach Criccieth Urban District was created under the Local Government Act 1894, [26] and covered the area of the former borough, which had been abolished in 1886 by the Municipal Corporations Act 1883. [27] The borough charter had been granted by Edward I in 1284. [28] The urban district covered 472 acres (191ha) and at the 1901 census had a population of 1,406. [29] By the time of abolition and incorporation into Dwyfor in 1974, it covered 1,721 acres (696ha), and had a population at the 1961 census of 1,672. [26] List of ancient parishes [ edit ] Image The whole of Llŷn is governed by Cyngor Gwynedd, a unitary authority established in 1996. The area had traditionally formed part of Caernarfonshire, for which an elected county council had been formed in 1889. Caernarfonshire was abolished in 1974 and incorporated into the new county of Gwynedd, which became a unitary authority under the 1996 reorganisation. [21]

Visiting Llŷn's best beaches

The Welsh Triads record regional resistance to Edwin's incursions into Gwynedd by a regional ruler Belyn ap Cynfelyn and his Gosgordd who were allied with Cadwallon ap Cadfan. [3] In subsequent years Llŷn was raided by vikings, most notably by Olaf in the late 10th century. [4] a b A Vision of Britain Through Time: Pwllheli Municipal Borough [ permanent dead link]. Retrieved 14 January 2010. Follow the Llyn Peninsula from Caernarfon to Porthmadog on this stunning coastal walk. The route is often completed in 7 sections: One beach has a pub right next to the sand. The beaches of the Llŷn Peninsula attract everyone from hardcore surfers to those who like to spend the day on the beach relaxing with a pint or two. The Llŷn is also one of the most steadfast strongholds of the Welsh language, and a great place to gain an introduction to it if you haven’t encountered it before. It looks a lot more difficult than it actually is, and any attempt to speak a few words is always warmly welcomed.

It also has an Aqua Park, which we tried on one (still chilly!) April morning. One of our favourite day’s out while in the Llyn Peninsula was on board the Woodland Wanderer, one of the journeys run by the Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railways. The walk starts from the train station and heads south to the front where there are two blue flag beaches. You then head west along the beach before following a footpath north to the River Rhydir and the Lon Cob Bach Nature Reserve. There's some nice walkways here with interesting flora and fauna to look out for.The name Llŷn is sometimes spelled Lleyn in English, although this spelling is now less common. The name is thought to be of Irish origin, and to have the same root– Laigin ( Laighin) in Irish–as the word Leinster and which also occurs in Porth Dinllaen on the north coast. [2] History [ edit ]

This circular walk around Abersoch uses the Llyn Coastal Path to explore the beautiful beaches and bays to the south and west of the village. View Full Details>>

Of more interest for kids, perhaps, is the wildlife that call Bardsey Island home. The island is a designated National Nature Reserve and is an important migratory route with an observatory established to monitor the birds. The waters surrounding the island are home to grey seals, dolphins and porpoises. The main beach to the south of the village is easily accessible, with outstanding views to Snowdonia and a row of higgledy-piggledy brightly painted beach huts completes a lovely scene. Darker or lighter sections, where the density of the original map sheets varied - as they may have been drawn and published years apart this variation is unavoidable. This walk takes you up to the Iron Age Hill fort of Garn Boduan on the Llyn Peninsula near Nefyn. View Full Details>> This delightful village is located on the Llyn Peninsula in Gwynedd. The village is well known for its splendid long beach which stretches for two miles from Ynys Cyngar on the River Glaslyn estuary along Tremadog Bay to Criccieth beach. View Full Details>>
