Much of what brand you prefer depends upon how you paint, so favorite brands vary widely from person to person.Many artists (like me) use a mix of brands. When it comes to watercolor brands, the only “rule” is this: Use the color that you love regardless of brand.

So I thought it might be helpful to compare these three, top watercolor brands along with their typical characteristics. However,all three brands are extremely well made, highly reliable watercolors that can work perfectly well together in a palette. The comparisons below are simply my personal observations regarding the three brands of paint and not necessarily true of every tube in every color of that particular brand.

Split Primary Selection – The primaries in this set are divided into warm and cool versions of each primary zone to maximize color mixing flexibility. Indian Yellow/Azo Yellow, Scarlet Pyrrol/Quinacridone Rose, & Ultramarine Blue/Phthalo Green Blue Shade

There is nothing inherently toxic about oil paints in particular. Generally, oil paints consist of pigment suspended in a binder, usually linseed, but sometimes safflower, poppy, or walnut oil. These binders are natural, plant-based and nontoxic. As with acrylic paint, oil paint contains pigment particles. Just as with the acrylics you have used, some pigments can have adverse physical effects if ingested or regularly applied to soft skin. Lead, cadmium and mercurial sulfides are the prime offenders, though the risk they pose in art materials is minimal if used properly. The greatest danger would come from actually eating or ingesting these chemicals. Allergies and sensitivities are harder to answer questions about. We are not physicians and cannot speak to every person’s particular situation. Third Row: Ultramarine Pink, Quinacridone Violet, Dioxazine Purple, Burn Umber, and…room for two more! Don’t worry… The paint will slowly dry out, and can easily be re-wetted without any loss of handling quality. I have a few things to say about why M. Graham watercolor paints take up permanent residency in my painting palette.Winsor & Newtonwatercolors (or watercoloursfor the diehard WN fan)have been in production since 1835 and currently offer 96 colors. Through the years, WN has consistently produced an excellent product which has resulted in the brand often being described by artists as "The Standard." Honey was used in the 19th century by French colourmen and was then copied by English manufacturers. Manufacturers soon substitued the honey with industrial sugars, probably for economic reasons.

Earth Tone Mixing– While the only earth tone in this set is Transparent Red Iron Oxide, the set has almost unlimited potential for easily mixing a number of beautiful, transparent and luminescent earth tones such as ochres, umbers, siennas, oxides, olives and other rich earthy hues. Basically the hues are brilliant as mentioned. The pigments for all the tubes are so intense you don’t need to squeeze out too much to get a good mixing. Paint texture is very consistent and mixing is easy. Even when the paint is dried on the palette, it is easily dissolved with water again, without loosing any of the paint quality when freshly squeezed from the tube.
