I like when my beliefs are challenged. I see it as an opportunity to learn and grow in my understanding of the world. Last year, for example, I thought Universal Basic Income was one of the stupidest and most ill-conceived ideas on the planet. Give people money for doing nothing? Who could think this was a good idea? This surreal cult classic rambles all over the place from missing teens to haunted mortuaries to alternate dimensions, but the most ominous aspect of Don Coscarelli’s dreamlike horror movie is by far Angus Scrimm’s performance as the mysterious “tall man.” He’s super strong, really creepy, and somehow in control of flying silver spheres that drill victims’ brains out. Like I said: surreal.

This spot almost went to Lon Chaney’s classic The Wolf Man from 1941, but let’s be honest here: this horror-comedy contains the scariest, freakiest, and most ferocious wolf-man combo we’ve ever seen. He’s another tragic villain to be sure, but between his first transformation, his initial killing spree, and that mayhem at Piccadilly Circus, yeah, scary werewolf. I learned that all of these points, play a fundamental role in human development and that they will lead us through a path of grace, restoration and the pursuit of the empowerment of our essences, to leave an indelible print for ourselves, our families, friends, beloved ones and therefore, to future generations, as well.

Perhaps predictably, as likely all my conversation partners would fall into the survey's "strong liberal" category, this fear was not much in evidence when I interviewed a handful of Twin Cities residents and an online acquaintance from Ohio about their display of "In this house" or signage like it. On the contrary, several expressed a sense of relief in having few or no known conservatives in their social circles who might take umbrage with their signs.

I was able to read an ARC of this book through Net Galley, and requested it since I have always worked to give my own five kids a magical childhood and love the idea of a book about making laughter a daily part of our family life. I got surprised when I realized the great impact the book was causing to my inner-self.
