Eltham Palace was bought in 1931 by the wealthy Stephen Courtauld who started a period of transformation and extension that led to some of the best-preserved Art Deco interiors you can find today.
Next on my list of secret London walks is one in Clerkenwell, Smithfield, and Hatton Garden. These local areas not only show off historic London at its best, but are also home to some of the best markets and restaurants in the heart of the city. This loveliest of secret London walks is perfect if you like to be on the water and take in a variety of sights and neighborhoods as you go. It’s a good alternative to the Thames Path, and a great way to see some local London neighborhoods. Meet the route at the north end of the Hampton Court Bridge. Walk with the river on your right and admire the Hampton Court Bridge and the palace.

The first of my secret London walks is in Hampstead. This is one of my favorite north London neighborhoods, and its village atmosphere makes it a great area for walks. Walk across the footbridge at Limehouse Basin, around Limehouse Marina, and take the twisted paths that take you straight to the Thames! Walking London has color photographs, complete route maps, and suggestions for pubs and restaurants to visit on each walk, too. London being all very green when you get that far away from the city centre, the London Loop is a lovely way to get a good dose of nature, we have to warn you though, it’s long. On the cusp of Farringdon and Holborn, the pub just so happens to be one of London’s historic drinking holes– there’s been a pub on these grounds since 1546 at least.
Walk through Cloudesdale Road, Elmfield Road, and reach Balham High Road. Pass Du Cane Court and continue on Balham Park Road. These are some great residential streets to take in the beautiful homes and charming streets.Mayfair might feel like an unlikely place to discover London’s secrets. After all, anyone who has ever heard of The Ritz and Green Park knows that Mayfair’s all about the old-school spenny glamour. 9. Hampstead Heath, North London
Red Lion Square - This small public square has a very intriguing history. It has been the scene of a pitched battle and may also be the final resting place of Oliver Cromwell. This is a simply beautiful stretch of Regent’s Canal. Best at sunrise or twilight, when the sun reflects on the water and all the houseboats are illuminated. Between castles, palaces and the Thames barrier, the architectural feats on this walk are stunning. Hampstead Heath Circular Walk (6.5 miles)
