About this deal

To the north of the tundra is the Arctic Ocean, the only ocean that can completely freeze over. Living here is one of the most peculiar animals on earth, the hooded seal. Males have extraordinary inflatable noses, producing a bright red balloon out of their left nostrils. One male hopes this will make him irresistible. Mountain-dwelling animals that cope with high altitude and icy temperatures are spotlighted including Japanese macaques, the kea parrot in New Zealand, plus pumas and flamingos in Chile.

We open the series with David on camera facing an enormous image of the planet on screen talking about satellite imagery from space, and how some of these regions are so remote that this is the only way to really see them. Then in the last episode we feature him in the studio watching the film. It's a little bit like you’re sitting next to David watching the film with him or almost like an intimate view of the series through his eyes.

The Frozen Planet II team worked with space imaging experts and scientists to document changes happening all across our frozen planet from space. For instance they used repeated photography from satellites to timelapse moulins forming on the Greenland ice sheet, document glaciers flowing and retreating in Greenland and South Georgia and sea ice disappearing during summer in the Arctic. Eleven years after the phenomenal Emmy, BAFTA and NTA award winning first series, Frozen Planet II will feature unchartered new worlds and pioneering technology capturing new behaviour, showcasing the ever-changing fragile world of beauty and hostility in these habitats. We discover just how much these icy worlds are changing and the dramatic impact this is having not just on these animals’ stories but on the whole planet. With as few as 120 individuals in the wild, the Amur leopard is the rarest big cat in nature. Thanks to the dedication of scientists and rangers in Russia’s Far East, the populations have almost tripled in the last ten years. Cubs are reported each year and there is hope for the recovery of the species. Amur leopards have rarely been filmed in the wild previously. This is the largest species of blue whale. It has rarely been filmed and never been filmed for a TV documentary. The first Frozen Planet series aired in 2011, and focused on the natural history of the polar regions and the effects of climate change on these locations. Episode 4 - Frozen South

The two-minute first look trailer teases scenes from four years of remarkable expeditions by BBC Studios Natural History Unit to all the Earth’s frozen frontiers - the Arctic, Antarctic, Tundra, Boreal Forest and the High Mountains. It shows off incredible animals in their natural habitats as never seen before, even joining forces to survive in brutal environments. These landmark series will help audiences everywhere to better understand the greatest issues affecting our planet and our relationship with the natural world.

Summer is a time of plenty in the Arctic Ocean as plankton blooms feed millions of tiny mouths, such as bizarre skeleton shrimps, as well as the biggest: bowhead whales. These ancient and long-lived whales arrive en masse every year at secret locations known as whale spas. But today, with the loss of summer sea ice, their peace is shattered by orcas from the south. These daring predators are bold enough to take on the much larger bowheads, targeting their vulnerable calves. Planet Earth III will be the most ambitious natural history landmark ever undertaken by the BBC. Combining the awe and wonder of the original Planet Earth, the new science and discoveries of Blue Planet II and Planet Earth II, and the immersive character-led storytelling of Dynasties, the series will take the ‘Planet Earth’ experience to new heights. It will air in 2022.Six long years later and this sequel proves worth the wait - not quite matching the wonder of the first but providing a magical new adventure nonetheless. Planet Earth III, an 8x60’ series for BBC One, is made by BBC Studios Natural History Unit., co-produced by BBC AMERICA and The Open University. The Executive Producer is Mike Gunton and the Series Producer is Jonny Keeling. It was commissioned by Charlotte Moore, BBC Director of Content and Tom McDonald, Head of Commissioning, Natural History and Specialist Factual. They are much smaller and more compact than other members of the fox family. This helps them to reduce heat loss due to lower total body surface area. They depend on lemmings as their main food source in inland areas creating a tight-knit predator-prey relationship between them. Like polar bears, Arctic foxes have a darker skin pigmentation underneath their fur coating. This is better at absorbing and retaining heat. Their fur changes colour seasonally – white in winter and grey in summer. With the ability to physically adapt to survive winter, Arctic foxes do not need to hibernate. Today Earth’s frozen regions are undergoing unprecedented change. In Our Frozen Planet we meet the scientists and people dedicating their lives to documenting these changes and understanding their impact, not just on the lives of the animals and people who live there, but on the planet as a whole.
