About this deal

Depending how high your property is and the builder/roofer/chimney sweep doing the work they might insist on scaffolding. Discuss this and any other hidden costs before entering into any agreement. Note also extra inspection hatches also aid fitting and inspection (only possible on larger closure plates and no good if adding insulating beads, ( insulating a liner I do not advise as a rule). If a 904 316 chimney liner is being fitted then a register plate is not required. A plate is still required (to prevent heat being wasted by travelling up into the chimney and also to prevent "old soot smells" into the room as a chimney warms from the heat of the liner) but this plate is called a closure plate which we will come to shortly. It is rare nowadays that chimney liners are not fitted (although stove flue pipes might be connected directly to pot lined chimneys) and register plates are rarely fitted nowadays. Martin Lewis: Do you have a Power of Attorney? It’s crucial protection – not just for the elderly – and more important than a will Fill deep holes in wall with spare mortar or use "bonding" (used before plastering to fill crevices and holes).

I wanted to know if there was a more permanent alternative? Maybe a register plate type fitting with a vent for ventilation? I've tried searching on-line and putting the job on mybuilder.com and ratedpeople.com but have had no response... not really sure where else to go. Open and close the door on a cheap Chinese stove. Then open and close the door on a DG stove, Arada stoves, Woodford stoves, Hamlet stoves or Saltfire stoves. You’ll understand the difference. What is the height required between the top of the stove collar and the closure plate if two elbows are on top of each other? 30cm covers this but allow 50cm if one elbow has a soot door. Height above stove is rarely mentioned anywhere for some strange reason but I mention it in my article Heat Shields and Distance to Combustibles for Wood Stoves. The round circles are “dri wall adhesive” and the smooth white area is board. Dabs flatten when board is pressed against them

Closure plate – your inglenook is unlined (brick/stone/rendered etc.)

But how do chimney balloons work? Chimney balloons are designed to inflate (usually by a plug-in wall outlet) and press against all four sides of your chimney so that it’s big enough to hold itself in place. A ventilation gap on the side of the balloon allows some airflow, which allows the chimney to “breathe” and not become so damp.

Lay out on piece of sheet metal – layout from center and leave enough room for a 1” extra flange around actual measurements. Before you start you will want to paint the surface of the inside walls of the recess and one side of the cement board with a PVA mix (3 water to 1 PVA). This is very important as without this stage the bond between wall and board may not be good. This article continues as if the closure plate is being fitted last of the three boards but bear this in mind when thinking about your install. You should have something that looks like the picture above (without my colleague in the picture unless he has been moonlighting). The left, right and rear of the recess are lined with cement board and a dangling chimney liner is present. As I have suggested in the smooth-lining section you can, if you wish, fit the closure plate before the liner goes in, and even before the wall-lining (just adapt the instructions as required). inch Deluxe Terra-Cotta Top Plates, 7.5 inch Deluxe Terra-Cotta Top Plates, 7.5 inch Deluxe Terra-Cotta (1)

If your recess is all over the place then you will probably have to make it up as you go along. One method is to cut the closure plate as close as possible to the shape of the recess (maybe in two or three pieces if it is proving difficult in one). Then wedge or prop it in place and insert strategically placed Thunderbolts as “pegs for the board to sit on. You can hide these pegs by smearing mortar into your corners. If you have room then adding access hatches to the plate means you can add mortar inside the chimney, on top of the plate (or you might be able to reach through your flue hole if you can get the liner out of the way).Position your stove on the hearth and plan your steel vitreous flue configuration. This may just be one piece of pipe or it may be more complicated. It is essentially a cosmetic addition and can also reduce the loss of heat into a chimney that is lined with flexible flue liner. We then attached a piece of plywood to the underside of the 2 x1 and drilled 4 holes in the middle of the plywood. We screwed a vent over the holes to allow the chimney to breathe then placed the electric log burner in the hole. Cut the pipe hole round at first, and cut it at least 1/4” larger than the line – you’ll need the extra room. Cutting this hole can be accomplished in numerous ways: The attic scenario does not compare because you cannot have a sealed attic- there are always sources of airflow, and sources of humid air in an attic.

You may have to bolt on the stove legs (if you have adjustable legs make sure the adjusters are loosened ready to go – they are sometimes bolts in threads and more difficult to sort out when the stove is in the recess). In either instance of a fireplace balloon or a glass door, you’ll have to measure your fireplace! The DIY RouteDo NOT use plasterboard of any kind inside the fireplace recess, even the pink fire-resistant stuff, as this is not allowed as plasterboard is not officially non-combustible (plasterboard okay on chimney breast though).
