ISBN 978-1-56159-239-5. ‎ Having made the statement above, I feel it important to offer an example of a performance that for me captures the essence of Bach and his music, bringing to life the multitude of emotions and moods that are contained in the ‘Well-Tempered Clavier’.Wikipedia article (covers both books; there are articles on individual preludes and fugues but not on book I and book II taken individually) Unfortunately, I have no talent for composing, but if you know what makes a great composer like Bach, you also know what not to do, which is to compose something mediocre," Schiff said in his acceptance speech. Watkin plays the first five suites on a cello by Francesco Ruggieri – a luthier contemporary of Bach’s whose instruments are famed for their warmth of tone – and the sixth on a rare five-string cello by the Amati brothers of the same period. But the extraordinarily resonant sound he makes is probably less to do with the instruments than with the playing itself, which is warm, expansive, generous and friendly. That is not to say that this performance is not of the highest level intellectually and technically: it is, and largely because of its appreciation of these suites as not just dances but discourses almost verbal in their directness. It is as if all the work that Watkin has ever done on these pieces has been absorbed absolutely and then reproduced in a performance that is able to be completely original in its voice at the same time as never producing a phrase that jars in its unsubtlety, or presents an ego that overarches the music... Gusztáv Fenyő performs these two exceptional cycles side-by-side in five recitals, each beginning with Bach and ending with Shostakovich, thus offering a unique listening experience which promises to enthral with the sheer abundance of musical ideas while highlighting their formal connections. The Associated Board of The Royal School of Music, London includes many of Bach’s works on their published practical examination list (2020-2021). This grading of difficulty is often seen as a reliable source of information when trying to judge the difficulty of the Well-Tempered Clavier pieces, amongst others. For example, Grade 8 Piano (the level just down from a Diploma), includes the ‘Prelude and Fugue’ in G (BWV 884) from the second book. No other works from the ‘Well-Tempered Clavier’ are included in the examination syllabus at earlier grades although other works from Bach are there.

The first movement may be alternatively titled, resulting in a fantasy and fugue, or a toccata and fugue, among others.

Johann Sebastian Bach's Werke. Das Wohltemperirte Clavier, Erster Theil / Zweiter Theil (Leipzig 1851): Indiana University School of Music score in GIF format J S Bach’s ‘Well-Tempered Clavier’, a monumental collection of 48 Preludes and Fugues, is recognised as one of the supreme achievements of Western music. Rich in musical invention and expression, its influence continues to resonate widely today.A monument in the history of Western music, The Well-Tempered Clavier represents not only the culmination of J. S. Bach's own maturation process but also the impetus for the emerging style and structure of modern keyboard music. Mozart, Beethoven, and Chopin were influenced by its polyphonic richness and depth of harmony, and Schumann counseled young musicians to "make The Well-Tempered Clavier your daily bread." Modern pianists can follow Schumann's advice with this new edition of an authoritative and long-out-of-print score that offers illuminating perspectives from a pair of eminent musical interpreters.
