Inspired by the Mediterranean flavors and overall joie de vivre of the South of France, Salcombe’s ‘Rosé Sainte Marie’ pink gin is distilled and crafted with a variety of thoughtful botanicals, including Macedonian juniper, angelica, and strawberries. The gin’s natural pink hue is obtained by macerating clear gin with unsweetened red fruits. No sugars, colorings, or artificial flavors are added. Expect flavors of strawberry, orange blossom, rose water, and pink peppercorn to jump from the gin’s smooth palate. Salcombe’s Rosé Sainte Marie Gin is also the only pink gin to win a double gold medal at San Francisco’s World Spirits Competition in 2020. And even then you can use a plain glass which holds approximately the same quanity. Beefeater Pink, to the nose, is strawberry hard candies, slowly dissolved into a syrupy puddle. It reminds me of the nose of COOL Gin— which although one of my favorite curiosities of the gin world, isn’t perhaps an example I would suggest other distilleries emulate.

Now that this “Pink Gin” thing is becoming a thing, rather than a one-off curiosity, I’ve revised some of my opinions on others in the category. I like the strength and gin flavor of Beefeater Pink a bit better than the 30% ABV Gordon’s Pink. It’s similar to Spanish Gins like COOL Gin, but ultimately benefits from beginning from a better base gin starting point.

The palate though leads with strawberry, does manage to pull through with a touch of gin on the finish. A hint of juniper mid-palate brings forth some warmth. Beefeater Pink finishes with a modicum of warm spice.Simply put, pink gin is made by macerating botanicals or fruit post-distillation with an otherwise colorless gin to obtain its signature pink hue. So what does a strawberry-flavored gin taste like? Well, a lot like strawberry-flavored vodka, it turns out.
