About this deal

In the 2000 direct-to-video sequel, Eric is a supporting character. Due to his marriage with Ariel, Eric is promoted as the new king of his kingdom with Ariel as his queen consort. Despite their happy marriage, the couple has a problem in protecting their daughter Melody from Ursula's sister, Morgana, who has sworn to avenge her sister and finish what she started. Fearing she will use Melody as leverage, Eric and Ariel erect a sea wall around the castle and raise her as an ordinary human girl unaware of her Atlantican roots. Melody distances herself from her parents as she grows up due to their rules against going into the sea. Linsey Miller crafts a novel that makes Prince Eric’s story more relevant to a modern teenage reader. She subtly uses non-gender-specific wording when characters in Eric’s sphere talk about love, and uses they/them pronouns when talking about the pirate Sauer. Ariel was always an inquisitive and take-charge character, which is consistently carried over through part of Eric’s adventure that she joins him for. Diehard fans of The Little Mermaidwill have to look past a few moments of contradiction with the film, such as Eric’s attempt at a near-fatal kiss with Ariel during a romantic boat ride, or Ursula’s magic shell not hypnotizing him right away when she appears on the shore singing to him as Vanessa. Speaking of Ursula, the book does a not-so-great job of trying to keep the identity of the witch who cursed Eric a secret. And then it misses the chance to have a meaningful moment between two of Ursula’s victims who found each other because of the sea witch’s meddling, skipping right from her demise to their wedding (although another modernization is a coda that sets their nuptials about two years later). Eric's friend Vanni's idea of Eric holding a singing competition to find the mysterious voice is a reference to " The Contest" from the musical adaptation of the animated film. Alice in Wonderland: Alice • Mad Hatter • March Hare • Dormouse • White Rabbit • Cheshire Cat • Tweedle Dum and Tweedle Dee • Queen of Hearts • King of Hearts • Caterpillar • Dinah • Oysters What I loved: This was such an engaging retelling of the story that breathes new life into it. The characters really come to life in the telling, and Eric in particular becomes more complex as he struggles with his curse and ruling his kingdom. The story is a little darker than the original, particularly with the Blood Tide and the arrival of ghosts cursed by the sea witch. These ghosts function like sirens trying to make bargains with the living ships by using the voices and appearances of their loved ones. These darker elements make it a really compelling read.

One of my favorite elements were the chapter titles. Most of them were song titles from the original film AND the Broadway play. Did I have Her Voice and One Step Closer in my head the whole time I was reading Absolutely. TL;DR: 3.5/5 stars, and I 100% cannot decide if I want to round up or down for this one. The first in a new series from Disney Publishing which "retells the classic Disney stories you thought you knew from the Disney Princes perspectives." As the story continues according to the movie we all know, Eric gets to know Ariel more while also worrying about the curse that threatens his life.A girl rescued me. She was singing. She had the most beautiful voice.” ―Prince Eric talking about Ariel Queen Eleanora: Eric's mother, who went out to sea to find answers to Eric's curse in the hope of breaking it, and had gone missing since. Eric was cursed while still in his mother’s womb to die if he should ever kiss or be kissed by anyone that isn’t his true love. Now weeks away from his 18th birthday and coronation, he must either find a bride to secure ties and save his struggling kingdom or find and kill the witch who cast the curse. Sleeping Beauty: Aurora • Prince Phillip • Maleficent • Flora • Fauna • Merryweather • Winter Aurora • Dragon Maleficent • Briar Rose • Peridot Maleficent

Finding Nemo/ Finding Dory: Nemo • Dory • Hank • Crush • Bruce • Baby Dory • Destiny • Bailey • Pearl • Platinum Nemo • Darla The Plague has left a population divided between Elites and Ordinaries—those who have powers and those who don’t; now, an Ordinary teen fights for her life. Sequel: Melody • Tip and Dash • Alex • Morgana • Cloak and Dagger • Undertow • Hammerhead Shark • Flounder's Guppies • Baby Penguin • Ursula and Morgana's Mother Prince Eric has yet to make an appearance in the Kingdom Keepers books, but he is mentioned by Ariel in the fourth book. Here she says she spends her days at Disney's Hollywood Studios very lonely for they keep Eric at Magic Kingdom, in the current show at Cinderella Castle. This book is also inclusive without feeling forced. One character, Gabriella, is a lesbian, while another character, Sauer, uses they/them pronouns. Both Gabriella’s sexuality and Sauer’s pronouns are no big deal. It’s treated so normally that it actually took me a while to notice Sauer’s pronouns.Cinderella: Cinderella • Jaq and Gus • Prince Charming • Fairy Godmother • Lady Tremaine • Lucifer • Suzy • Perla • Bruno For fans of Twisted Tales and Villains is a brand new YA series that retells the classic Disney stories you thought you knew from the Disney Princes' perspectives.

Once Upon a Time: Once Upon a Time (Book) • Snow White's Glass Coffin • Red Riding Hood • Maleficent's Staff • Magic Wand • Glass Slipper • Poisoned Apple • Spinning Wheel • Magic Lamp • Dark One's Dagger • Chipped Cup • Jefferson's Hat • Magic Beans • Captain Hook's Hooks • Enchanted Candle • Pixie Dust • Dreamshade • Salad Fork • Pandora's Box • Silver Slippers • Sorcerer Hat • Enchanted Broom • Trident • Enchanted Shell • Heroes and Villains (Book) • Merida's Bow • Magical Rose • Excalibur • Olympian Crystal • Cinderella's Dress • Golden Scarab Beetle • Rapunzel's Frying Pan • Magical Golden Flower • Shrinking Potion • Floating Lanterns • Tarot Cards • Maui's Fish Hook In the original Little Mermaid fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen, the Prince is nameless and his love for the mermaid was strictly platonic.

Season Five: Merida • Queen Eleanor • King Fergus • Harris, Hubert, and Hamish • The Witch • Lord MacGuffin • Lord Macintosh • Lord Dingwall • King Arthur • Sir Kay • Guinevere • Gorgon The Invincible • Charon • Brennan Jones • Hades • Megara • Hercules • Cerberus • The Scarecrow • Toto • Cleo Fox • Auntie Em • Dr. Jekyll • Mr. Hyde • Evil Queen True YA, but will probably appeal to New Adults who are now Disney Adults as Xennials were 100% the target audience for Little Mermaid when it first came out.

I am always nervous when I read these Disney retellings because they're usually a miss but REST ASSURED, this one is not. Nora: Captain Sauer's second-in-command. She never knew she was the child of a human and a mermaid.Frozen: Elsa • Anna • Olaf • Sven • Kristoff • Marshmallow • Grand Pabbie • The Fire Spirit • Elsa the Snow Queen • Queen Anna • Diamond Elsa • Young Anna • Citrine Anna • Opal Olaf The book's chapters' titles are references to songs from the animated film and its musical adaptation. There is one chapter title that is a reference to Return to the Sea. I LOVED seeing their relationship fleshed out so fully and having them understand each other on a much deeper level. Wonky sign language charades and all.
