About this deal

In the first book, Charlie, Benjamin, Fidelio and Olivia are most prominent in the plot. The second book has Charlie, Olivia, Fidelio, Final Battle: Finally happens in the eighth book, against Count Harken and his army. The good guys win. Evil Old Folks: Quite a few, but Ezekiel Bloor deserves special mention; he's a Grumpy Old Man taken to the extreme. Corrupt the Cutie: In the third book, Yolanda does this to Dorcas Loom, to turn her to the side of the bad endowed. Olivia also has this done to her in the final book by Titania Tilpin, after the Bloors discover her illusionist powers. She gets better eventually, with a lot of help from Emma and Alice Angel.

Tancred Torsson is a storm-bringer. His Scandinavian ancestor was named after the thunder god, Thor. Tancred can summon wind, thunder, snow, rain, and lightning. He is also a very dear friend of Lysander Sage. Tancred was also almost drowned by Dagbert Endless in the seventh book. At the very end, I willingly said 'Goodbye! And GOOD RIDDANCE!' to Grandma Bone/Grizelda, Venetia, Lucretia, Eustacia, Titania Tilpin/Mrs Tilpin/Miss Chrystal, Ezekiel and company. And I UNwillingly said 'bye :(' to the series. It's finished and it was great. This is a magical fantasy that’s fast-paced and quite easy-to-read. The main character, Charlie Bone has a very special gift; he can actually hear people in photos talking. The fabulous powers of Red King were initially passed down via his descendants, after they had turned up quite unexpectedly in a person who didn’t have any idea where they actually came from. This is exactly what happened to Bone and some of the children that he met behind the grim, the gray wall of Bloor’s Academy. What's with the "Mom's don't exist here" line? It would have fit if they made fun of Charlie for wanting his mom or something, but why the ominous and fairly idiotic statement? Why Don't You Just Shoot Him?: It would've been much easier for the Bloors if they'd just killed Lyell in that car accident in 1994. The only reason they didn't was because Grizelda insisted on sparing him, and they also wanted to find out from him the location of the pearl-inlaid box that contains Maybelle's will. However, this is subverted in the fifth book, when Harken (with the Bloors' and Yewbeams' full knowledge) makes Amy forget Lyell to stop him waking up from his trance, as it's heavily implied, if not stated outright, that Lyell will die if Amy forgets him completely. Then in the last three books the Bloors resort to trying to drown him before he remembers where he put the pearl-inlaid box. When Ben thinks Fidelio "just looks musical", and offers no explanation as to why. How does someone look musical? Very practical, useful powers...sure... I was waiting for the kids to pop up, who could hear colors or speak to doorknobs.

Then at the end, Emma and her aunt don't want to bother with the details, so they stop caring that Emma was imprisoned her entire life and that her father was murdered. And Emma is perfectly happy to return to the school that is run by her captors. Archnemesis Dad: A curse on Dagbert Endless' family ensures that when he turns thirteen, he will have to battle his father, Lord Grimwald, to the death. He wins.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Time Skip: The Stones of Ravenglass takes place a year after The Secret Kingdom. The third book takes place at least twenty years after the second one. Hero with Bad Publicity: Christopher Crowquill was framed for robbery by the Bloors and sent to jail for seven years. After he gets out, he comments that the only person who still stood by him even though he was a criminal was Alice Angel.

I Never Told You My Name: Alice Angel knows Olivia's name immediately when she and Charlie walk into her shop, and uses it repeatedly. It doesn't say much for Charlie's intelligence that he doesn't think anything is wrong until Alice also says his name. It turns out that, unknown to them Alice is Olivia's next door neighbor, godmother, and self-declared guardian angel and a friend of Charlie's Uncle Paton. I Just Want to Be Normal: Charlie frequently wishes to be normal, particularly when he first discovers his endowment and goes to Bloor's. He gets over this after discovering the extent of his power and how useful it is in helping other people and discovering truths no one has ever known before. Yes, there is an 11 year old boy who has a magical “ability”. Yes, there is a special school for children with these abilities. Apart from that, the story is quite different. I had to push the Harry Potter thought out of my head and start thinking Charlie Bone, because wherever I got that idea…I was wrong…and it was wrong of me to continue reading with that thought in my head. Really 700 Years Old: Yolanda Yewbeam, who's over one-hundred years old by the time of her appearance in Blue Boa but looks like a little girl, and also her father Yorath. It turns out that Lyell Bone is the true heir to Maybelle's will, and thus heir to the Bloor's immense fortune.

Q&A Asked about Midnight for Charlie Bone

Lucretia Yewbeam is the eldest of Charlie's great-aunts and the younger sister of Grandma Bone. She is unendowed, but is just as nasty as her sisters.
