About this deal

A properly designed French drain system does not require an outlet. The water will simply soak into the soil as it flows along the perforated pipe. In fact, a French drain doesn’t require an inlet on just one end either. You can construct the drain to accept water along its length, and disperse it underground. Because the pipes are perforated, water will get inside from every angle and not just from the lowest part of your garden. That way it will be more easily distributed. Important to remember: the holes need to point down. Otherwise, the water would need to fill the entire ditch before it has a chance to reach the holes. The photo is just an example to illustrate this type of drainage and should not be followed without initial preparations and research.

Mark the position of the side trenches and ensure that they join the main drain at a 45 degree angle to form the herringbone pattern.

Stormwater may be directed into city irrigation ditches with permission from the local water department. DIY drainage system installation cost Allowing water to drain through a surface is the first part but for a garden drainage system to work it needs to go somewhere. The destination of the water needs to be able to handle the quantity which it frequently gets in moderate to bad rain. For smaller gardens a 400L capacity may be suitable. For low points which collect the whole neighbourhoods rain you will need a much larger solution.Next dig out the run. This is best done with a trenching spade (these can be obtained from your local builders’ merchant). The depth should start at about 400 mm and slope in the direction of the intended flow of water, ideally at 6 mm fall per metre of trench. To test the fall, run some water from a hosepipe to the higher end of the trench and see if that water flows smoothly down the trench.
