Rear Camera - 4K Video Recording at 24 fps, 30 fps or 60 fps, 1080p HD Video Recording at 30 fps or 60 fps, 720p HD Video Recording at 30 fps, Extended Dynamic Range for Video upto 60 fps, Slow-motion Video Support for 1080p at 120 fps or 240 fps | True Depth Camera - 4K Video Recording at 24 fps, 30 fps or 60 fps, 1080p HD Video Recording at 30 fps or 60 fps, Slow-motion Video Support for 1080p at 120 fps, Extended Dynamic Range for Video at 30 fps fps For the iPhone 11 Pro, the 256GB model should almost be the default. With its three rear cameras and ability to record from all the cameras at once, it'll be able to use up a serious chunk of storage in no time. 64GB just wouldn't be enough for the Pro unless you don't take advantage of the cameras, and then you might as well go with the standard iPhone 11. On the performance front, Apple's A13 Bionic chipset makes unsurprising gains, offering performance you won't find on Android phones. Every new phone is snappy in the beginning, sure, but we found video editing and exporting to be noticeably faster on the iPhone 11 Pro.

Apple redesigned its iPhone camera app, surfacing options to take photos in the 16:9 aspect ratio along with 4:3 (normal) and square (formerly a dedicated mode you'd always accidentally find yourself in). This has made capturing photos for TechRadar in the 16:9 format infinitely easier without the need to crop in post. Great start. Like the last few iPhones the 11 Pro is able to survive a dunking thanks to IP68 waterproofing. (Image credit: Future)In reality, you won’t notice much difference between this and last year’s phones in day to day use. I placed an iPhone Xs Max right next to the iPhone 11 Pro and played the same scene from Netflix’s Marco Polo and, although I could see slightly more clarity in the highlights on the iPhone 11 Pro, the difference wasn’t night and day. It’s still a wonderful display for watching high-quality movie and TV content on – the best there is, in my view – it’s just not a huge improvement. Arsenic Free Display, Mercury Free Display, Free of Brominated Flame Retardants, PVC Free, Beryllium Free, Recyclable Steel, Return System for Old Models All things considered, although the differences aren’t huge between the best phones on the market these days, I’d confidently say that Apple has pushed the iPhone 11 Pro to the top once again. It’s the most accomplished camera system in a smartphone today. Technically, Huawei’s Mate 30 triple-camera system is just as good, the fact that you can’t officially buy that phone in the UK or get Google Apps to work on it means it’s not a practical alternative. Plus it’s hugely expensive at€1,100. Hands up: I was wrong about the iPhone 11 Pro. Or at least, the design. When I first clapped eyes on it I instinctively didn’t like the look of the thing. That trio of camera lenses looked, to my eyes, awkward – ugly even – peering like some three-eyed Harry Potter out of the rear of the phone. All of the comparisons show a very clear advantage for the iPhone 11 Pro. The colours are more naturalistic, the details are sharper and there’s less visual noise in finely textured areas. Look at the grey rug on the shot of the chair and the wall-mounted plant pot behind it; the iPhone 11 Pro’s shot is cleaner and more detailed than the Pixel’s capture, which is spoiled somewhat by blotchiness. I found the iPhone was able to nail focus more reliably than the Pixel, too. In the photograph of the barbecue, my first attempt with the Pixel was blurry and unusable.

While Dolby Vision and HDR10 have been supported since the iPhone X, the library of HDR content has grown in the last two years. We're also treated to Dolby Atmos sound on the iPhone 11 Pro, simulating surround sound from the stereo speakers. This is great for those rare times you're not using your AirPods. But it’s the rest of the iPhone 11 Pro’s glass rear that proves ultimately persuasive, its matte finish beautifully smooth – a silky texture that feels like beach glass, ground smooth by years of tidal shift. Apple has also made a host of other improvements, to the screen, battery life, water-resistance and the performance of the phone, along with the usual extras that go along with a new version of iOS but none trumps that new camera. We made a conscious decision last year to favor the iPhone XS Max for its battery life over the iPhone XS, but that's not as big of a deal here. Apple eliminated 3D Touch to fit in a bigger battery and the new display has more efficiency, so we're able to recommend this smaller iPhone to power users without hesitation. Another nice addition here is the ability to have the camera capture images from the ultra-wide and primary cameras simultaneously. Then, if you go in and edit the photo, you can recompose and re-crop using the wider angle shot. The 256GB storage capacity is available for both the Pro and non-Pro version of the iPhone, and it's probably going to be a strong option for a lot of users. Heavy iPhone 11 users may want to go with the 256GB size if they plan on storing a lot on their phone and capturing photos and videos on a daily basis. Dark mode in iOS 13 makes apps like Apple Music look very different (Image credit: Future) iOS 13, iOS 14, iOS 15 and performance That said, if you're relying less and less on computers and want to make the iPhone 11 Pro the center of your tech world, it might not be a bad idea to jump to 512GB. This will give you room to keep the photos and videos you shoot local. You can also keep a local music library and save money by cancelling music streaming plans. With flight mode engaged and the display set to 170cd/m2 to ensure a consistent brightness across all phones we test, the iPhone 11 Pro lasted 17hrs 15mins before requiring a recharge. That’s four and a half hours longer than the iPhone Xs, which represents a significant 35% over last year’s phone. That’s not surprising given the battery has grown in capacity but it’s still welcome and brings the iPhone 11 Pro almost level with the Samsung Galaxy S10. It’s still no match for the Snapdragon 855-equipped phones we’ve seen recently, though, such as the Xiaomi Mi 9.

Apple claimed that the iPhone 11 Pro can last four hours longer than the iPhone XS, and true enough, we did see a noticeable increase over last year's 5.8-inch phone. But the bigger the phone, the larger the battery Apple is able to fit in; the 6.1-inch iPhone 11 and 6.5-inch iPhone 11 Pro Max lasted longer. The other two cameras are similar to last year. There’s a primary 12-megapixel f/1.8 camera with optical image stabilisation (OIS) and a field of view equivalent to a 26mm lens on a camera with a full-frame sensor. And, finally, there’s a 2x telephoto camera with a resolution of 12-megapixels, an aperture of f/2, OIS and a field of view equivalent to a 52mm lens on a camera with a full-frame sensor. But, if you tend to record a lot of video (which the iPhone 11 Pro cameras will surely encourage), you'll likely find 64GB option falls short of your needs. Just a few minutes of 4K video can add up to gigabytes of storage, and the Pro model's ability to record from multiple cameras at the same time will mean even bigger files. 64GB isn't going to be enough to keep up with that rate of regular recording. There's more good to come, though. Apple's most recent software update brought a 'Deep Fusion' feature that takes nine exposures and fuses them into a single image after a bunch of machine learning and pixel-by-pixel processing. Even with some options surfaced in the app, you can't change from 4K video to 1080p or 30fps to 60fps without exiting the camera app and diving several menus deep into the system-wide Settings menu. Why?

The Apple iPhone 11 Pro is fast, chock-full of new features and has an unbelievably good set of cameras

Even with the unchanged 5.8-inch screen size, the iPhone 11 Pro display has been re-worked to be brighter, and it's noticeable when viewing the phone outdoors in sunny conditions. Its maximum brightness reaches 800 nits with normal content onscreen.

It’s difficult to divorce any discussion of the merits or otherwise of the iPhone 11 Pro without mention of the price, so let’s get that out of the way first. In my view, considering how good the rest of its rivals are right now, the iPhone 11 Pro is simply too expensive. You can spend half as much on an Android phone that’s 90% as good as this, with better battery life and far more storage. The front-facing selfie camera has also had an upgrade, with resolution upped to 12-megapixels from only seven. Apple has also added its very own version of night mode, which I’ll get onto below. All three cameras on the rear are capable of recording 4K video at 60fps. Triple 12MP Ultra Wide, Wide and Telephoto Cameras, Ultra Wide: f/2.4 Aperture and 120Degree Field of View, Wide: f/1.8 Aperture, Telephoto: f/2.0 Aperture, Portrait Mode with Advanced Bokeh and Depth Control, Portrait Lighting with Six Effects (Natural, Studio, Contour, Stage, Stage Mono, High-key Mono), Dual Optical Image Stabilisation (Wide and Telephoto), Five Element Lens (Ultra Wide), Six-element Lens (Wide and Telephoto), Brighter True Tone flash with Slow Sync, Panorama (up to 64MP), 100% Focus Pixels (Wide), Night Mode, Auto Adjustments, Next Generation Smart HDR for Photos, Wide Colour Capture for Photos and Live Photos, Advanced Red Eye Correction, Photo Geotagging, Auto Image Stabilisation, Burst Mode, Image Formats Captured: HEIF and JPEG Extended dynamic range is incredibly impressive. In this mode, the iPhone 11 Pro’s camera captures 4K video at 120fps internally with each alternating frame shot at different exposure levels and then combined to produce a pseudo-HDR effect. It’s subtler than you might expect but it does balance out the bright and dark areas of footage in a surprisingly effective manner. Impressive stuff but, scarily enough, it’s only set to get better when Apple’s AI-driven Deep Fusion low-light algorithms arrive later this year. Google’s soon-to-arrive Pixel 4 looks to have some very serious competition on its hands. The iPhone 11 Pro battery consistently lasted us more than a day during our testing, often stretching close to a day and a half, even with heavy use. When enabled, the iOS 13 low-power mode really extends the life of this battery.
