About this deal

No edge or oversharpening was applied. There is some minor camera ringing, but I thought it was fine. The resolution is quite nice and allows the film grain to breathe, unlike the Blu-ray. Facial detail is revealing without being too intrusive. There is some softness in some scenes, but I found this to be, again, stylization rather than a flaw. from a then new 4K scan, since the only information I could find simply offered a generic and frankly unhelpful in this instance "4K

Subdued saturation keeps flesh tones flat and primaries dry. This isn’t a movie meant to pop, and at times, it’s near monochrome. Audio proceedings. As Ken mentioned in his review and I'll concurred in my 1080 review, you'll be able to spot some softness, and I'd say maybe even

Either you're part of the problem, or you're part of the solution. Or you're just part of the landscape." In fact, the original 4-channel Dolby Stereo design is a very front-heavy, near-mono presentation with practically no activity in the surrounds and all the attention on the on-screen action. To be fair, movement across the front channels is satisfying and effective for a movie of this caliber and vintage, and even when applying the receivers' Dolby Surround or DTS: Neural:X up-mixing functionality, atmospherics seldom lightly bleed into the top heights or sides. Admittedly, this broadens the soundstage ever so slightly in some of the bigger action set pieces, but it's still nothing memorable or noteworthy. Meanwhile, those same sequences come with a rather meager sense of presence, as the mid-range largely feels restrained and uniform despite exhibiting strong distinction in the louder moments. The same can sadly be said of the lower frequencies, providing adequate bass to gunfire and the climactic bus chase but with very little impact or weight. Dialogue reproduction is also good and intelligible for the most part, but occasionally, vocals can lightly be drowned out by some of the action.

The biggest thing for me is dialog balancing. The balance is poor compared to the rest of the movie. Dialog is 1 to 2db low compared to sounds around. So, I'd like to see the movie rebalanced and remixed. If that allows it to sometime down the road to get an Atmos upgrade in 5 years then I'd be looking forward to that. slight variations in focus pulling, and there's a bit of fuzziness that can be detected in passing as a result that tends to be noticeable on the edges of in 2017, and while this new 4K UHD release sports the slightly (and to my ears weirdly) rejiggered name of 20th Century Productions (aren't we in a These men are devoted to their work above all else, and they’re okay with that. It’s a sentiment that’s very much in the tradition of American individualism (it’s no fluke that Mann previously adapted James Fenimore Cooper’s The Last of the Mohicans). It feels good to be good at something. There’s something comforting about applying knowledge to the point where it becomes instinct, and if these guys weren’t cops or robbers we could admire them the way we do the mechanic who fixes our broken car. A person is attractive when they do what they like and do it well. That doesn’t mean they’re easy to live with, as Hanna and McCauley prove time and again, unless you happen to be working with them and speaking their language.
