On the nose, the Haig Club Whiskey is sweet and delicate, representing a lighter, more easily drinkable solution than heavier alternatives. In its scent, it is possible to recognize the freshness deriving from the lemon zest. Sweeter notes are also noticeable, including the ones of vanilla and honey. Behind its sharp tingle, there were some unexpected notes that I quite enjoyed. For instance, the coconut and Williams pear were quite a surprise. Meanwhile, the butterscotch and toffee, while somewhat flat, weren’t unpleasant to take in. Despite an overall briney character, Haig Club’s nose is remarkably sweet. While it’s not particularly intense nor complex is aroma, it is rather pleasant with a smooth eucalyptic nosefeel.
The Cameronbridge distillery meanwhile went from strength to strength and now, in the ownership of Diageo, is one of the largest distilleries in Europe. After a short while, you would be able to big up some creamier sweet notes of crème brûlée and toffee. However, it seems like the bay leaf note persists right up until the finish. The John Haig & Co Ltd was only founded in 1802. However, the art of whiskey distillation had been running in the family since 1600, when Robert Haig, an ancestor of John Haig, went to Holland to learn all the industry secrets. DCL combined with John Walker & Son and Buchanan- Dewar in 1925 and was then acquired by Guinness in 1986, [10] which put it into its United Distillers subsidiary in 1987. Guinness then merged with Grand Metropolitan to form Diageo in 1997. [11]

While this whiskey entered the market only in 2014, its distillery is one of the oldest single grain distilleries in Scotland. A Haig distillery, now known as the Cameronbridge distillery, was founded in 1824. Their daughter, also named Margaret, married a local lawyer John Jameson from Alloa in 1788. On marriage, John and Margaret Jameson moved to Dublin to run a new Stein family distillery in Bow Street which had been opened in 1780. The first thing that you’ll notice with Clubman is its almost straw-coloured hue, which I would liken more to a lager or pale ale beer.
