About this deal

So I don’t use too much, I keep a bottle of diluted Sal Suds by my sink: 1/2 c. (120 mL) of Sal Suds in a quart (1 L) of water. A small squirt in a pot or a larger squirt for a sink.

Friend, I’m not here to answer those questions for you. I hope to provide you with a little insight, through today’s recipe post, into what I’m currently using to clean my mountain-like pile of daily dishes. The key ingredient in my first dish soap recipe is Sal Suds, castile soap’s big and super strong brother. With that ingredient, I started to experiment with different combinations, and finally discovered just about the simplest dish soap formula that can be made at home. Simple and effective dish soap that takes less than one minute to make? Yes, please!!! Let’s take a look at the 3 ingredients in this DIY dish soap… For best results, empty toilet. Spray bowl thoroughly with All-Purpose Spray, sprinkle baking soda on the brush, scrub bowl, let sit 10 minutes, turn water on, flush. Errr, hold on! Why are you recommending a product that has sodium lauryl sulfate as an ingredient? Isn’t SLS dangerous? Hard Water Stains: To remove hard water stains I use either Sal Suds all purpose cleaner or Bon Ami.Dr. Bronner’s Sal Suds is sold online at Dr. Bronner’s web store: www.drbronner.com, or at Whole Foods Market, as well as natural product retailers nationwide in addition to many other grocers and retailers. Face and Body Wash: Combined with raw honey and water, liquid castile soap makes a great face and body wash. Urine stains: a 1:15 dilutionof Sal Suds with 5 drops of lemon essential oil works great on urine stains and smells in the bathroom. For mattress urine stains, I sprinkle with baking soda, then spray with this mixture and wipe up. teaspoon (5 mL) Sal Suds in 1 gallon (4 L) of hot water. 20 drops tea tree oil (optional). Dunk mop (microfiber, preferably) and wring thoroughly. On wood and laminate, avoid excess water and mop up wet areas. Also, I understand the reasons to go sulfate-free, which I will discuss in a future post. What does Sal Suds smell like?

Blinds: I make a spray of 1 tablespoon ofSal Suds in a spray bottle of water to clean blinds or if I’m feeling really ambitious, I take them all down and add to a bathtub full of warm water with 1/2 cup Sal Suds, soak for 15 minutes and scrub. Air dry before hanging. Even though it's safe on skin, we don't recommend using it on people or animals as it can be drying. As with our Castile Soap Dilutions Cheat Sheet, these recommendations are not set in stone and we encourage you to experiment. That said, here are tried and true mixing instructions to suit any of your cleaning needs! Moisturizing Oil:This is another optional ingredient. Since this dish soap sits next to our sink, it’s also used as a hand soap on occasion, and particularly when Dustin’s been working in the garage (hello, dirty and greasy hands). I like to add a skin-loving oil to this soap to help take away the harsh soap feel since it’s being used on our bare hands. Water and oil don’t mix, so this oil rests on top of the dish soap until we shake the soap dispenser. But we’re not talking about just one. Surfactant molecules work in groups. In a solution, they float around looking for oil molecules and snag with those hydrophobic tails, totally surrounding each oil molecule so there’s no part of the oil molecule left exposed to water. This little nugget is called a micelle.Stain Treating: There are many natural ways to treat stains ( here’s a helpful chart),and 1/4 cup Sal Suds Concentrate diluted in a spray bottle of water is a great all-purpose pre-treat for stains. You know when kids get in a fight and you try to find out what actually happen but get a long story and multiple answers? That is how I feel when it comes to borax. On the one hand, it is touted as a great green cleaner, but on the other people claim that it is harmful and deadly.

Hydrophilic literally means “water ( hydro) loving ( philic).” This end of the surfactant molecule grabs hold of water. On the other side, hydrophobic means “water ( hydro) fearing ( phobic).” A little exaggerated perhaps, but this end grabs the oil. Carpet Cleaning: To clean carpet naturallyI pre-treat stains with a 1:10 dilution of Sal Suds in water and then use 1 drop of the concentrate in a steam cleaner ( full tutorial here). The same preservative used to preserve dead bodies is found in SO many cleaning, laundry, bath, body and beauty products. It's everywhere because it's cheap to make and effective. However, it is quite toxic for us. Exposures to it even in small amounts can lead to cancer, yes, cancer, and that's according to the CDC. The EPA has labeled it a Class B1 probable carcinogen and can cause acute toxicity when exposed to the skin. Other Toxins Dishes (Handwashing): ½ – 1 ½ tsp. (2.5 mL to 7.5 mL) Sal Suds in a large sink of water. Or 1 drop Sal Suds for one pot, more if needed. In the natural world, we have vilified Sodium Laureth Sulfate. We say it's a carcinogen and highly toxic to aquatic life. In most cases, this is true. But did you know that not all SLS is created equal? It depends on how it's processed. Try to make a green cleaner without either of those and it is tough to make an effective one, especially because my non-negotiable standards are: capful (1/2 Tbsp. or 7.5 mL) Sal Suds in about 1 gallon (4 L) of water. Swish gently. Let soak 10 minutes. Swish again. Rinse with clean water. Gently press out excess water with a towel. Hang clothing or lay flat to dry.

Castile soap doesn’t provide enough grease-cutting power to be considered an effective dish soap, in my opinion. If you’d like to try using castile soap in this recipe, then you’ll want to leave out the vinegar, but again, I don’t believe you’re going to get the grease-fighting power most people look for in a good dish soap. Dr. Bronner's Sal Suds Biodegradable All-Purpose Cleaner can clean just about any surface that can get wet! Compared to our Castile soaps, there's quite a bit of overlap when it comes to the variety of its uses. Because the products can often be interchanged, it's mostly a matter of personal preference, but the Sal Suds All-Purpose Cleaner is more highly concentrated and more clean-rinsing in hard water situations and slightly more effective on grease and tough stains. Sal Suds has a texture similar to thin liquid soap or shower gel. Sal Suds vs castile soap – Is Sal Suds castile soap? Stainless Steel Appliances & Sink: Spray appliance with All-Purpose Spray. Wipe with a soft damp cloth in the direction of the grain. Spray sink and sprinkle with baking soda from a shaker. Scrub then rinse.

30+ Uses for Green Cleaners

Glue and Adhesives: Use a 50:50 mixture of Sal Suds and water. Spray on, let sit 5 minutes and scrub off. Ammonium Quaternary Sanitizers (Quats/ Synthesized Cationic Surfactants)– eye, skin and lung irritation and prolonged exposure can even cause death
