About this deal

The DECO convex diffuser is mounted in the tweeters of the Pioneer DM 40, ensuring that the high-frequency content is distributed evenly in each direction.

Pioneer Corporation, commonly referred to as Pioneer, is a Japanese multinational company headquartered in Tokyo, Japan, that specialises in producing digital entertainment products. The company was founded by Nozomu Matsumoto in 1938 in Tokyo as a radio and speaker repair workshop. Current CEO is Susumu Kotani. Features Prices valid in stores (all including VAT) until close of business on 28th November 2023. (Some of these web prices are cheaper than in-store, so please mention that you've seen these offers online.) The DM 40 monitors are missing some strength and accuracy in the top end. Each speaker has 21W of power behind them – this is not a lot, but more than enough to practice your mixing skills comfortably, and casually enjoy music, movies, and games. Especially if you want to practice your DJing skills, having a pair of speakers that make you want to move is an essential point to cover. The low end is most certainly accentuated on the Pioneer DM-40s. Whether that is good, depends on what you want from your monitors. While these speakers are reasonably compact, they’re not tiny, and they’re not particularly light, either: Some speakers down at this end of the market are smaller, and other lighter, being made predominantly of plastic, but the Pioneer DJ DM-40s have a reassuring wooden construction and weight to them. This usually translates to better sound quality, because the cabinet remains still as the speaker cones move to produce the sound. The speakers are also front ported, meaning there’s a slot in the front of each to allow air to move in and out of the unit for a fuller bass.

When it comes to how it’s built, this speaker feels solid and firm. The speaker has a beautiful crescent diffuser to lead the high frequencies that nest around the bass driver. Furthermore, this speaker has two ports in the front. These ports ensure that you can mount the speaker next to a wall without effect. Great studio monitors are probably the most important sonic tool to help you create and shape your music – they are, essentially, your digital ears. The inputs are certainly not extensive enough to suit a variety of applications, but they cover the essential needs. In any case, adapters can be of help if one wants more options. If you are hard-pressed to invest more into your monitoring system, then you can rest assured that the DJ DM 40s will still be impressive for your DJ practice, and casual listening. We would also like to make clear that it is also entirely possible to produce music on sonically inaccurate speakers. They are not as lightweight as they may seem, but that is indeed beneficial. Many of the low-tier cabinets are made out of plastic, whereas the DM 40 speaker cabinets are made out of wood. Our only advise regarding the speaker is to take care when handling and moving the DM-40. Because the speaker uses a soft dome tweeter and doesn’t feature speaker grills it can be easy to dent, ruining not only the look but the sound of the speaker. DM-40 Sound Quality But these are not up to the task of more intense studio work or a professional setting which is not surprising considering the price point. The target market is not studio professionals, but beginners who want the best of both worlds, and the DM-40D does an admirable job filling that role. Getting your room acoustics on point is half the battle when it comes to making the best out of your audio system.

If you are serious, then double the price can get you some truly outstanding budget speakers, such as the Adam T5Vs. Finally a headphone connections (1/8th TRRS) is found on the front of the left speaker. Once connected mutes output the loudspeaker. Ideal for late night sessions, should the speaker be permanently connected to your device of choice. Bluetooth Model (DM-40BT) When placed next to similar sized speaker, the warmth of the bass really shines through. Leaning towards the lower frequencies, it’s clear these speakers have been designed with DJ’s in mind. The bass is deep and punchy, creating a warm tone that will easily fill a bedroom or office. Given the speakers bass heavy EQ, the DM-40 is ideal for DJ use and listening to electronic music rather than any form of production work.

The Tweeter and the woofer are both carefully positioned to eliminate crossover and ensure that you get a balanced response across the frequencies. They have also included class AB amplifiers to ensure that you get perfect clarity with little distortion and no loss of quality. We tested the Pioneer monitors in a small studio, where we had already performed an acoustic measurement, and based on the results, the acoustic treatment was also done. On the walls were printed sound-absorbing panels depicting instruments and parametric diffusers in a rather modern style. In a music studio, perfect musical piece of work can only be made if the acoustics of the place are properly treated with the right acoustic elements. While one will not experience the bliss of intricate sonic details, the overall good quality is impressive at such a low price. Pioneer DM 40: The Final Verdict Pioneer DJ’s top mixers, DJ controller units, and CDJs cost a pretty penny, there is no way around that. However, in recent years the company has started leaning into the beginner-friendly market. The company’s efforts to create budget-friendly options of its gear have been praised by many due to the great results.

Pioneer DJ know their ways around the dance world, and this knowledge seems to have seeped into building the DJ DM 40 speakers.

DJ Education & Community

The woofer and the Tweeter are carefully aligned to eliminate crossover and also make sure that you get a balanced response across the frequencies while the class AB amp ensures outstanding clarity and little distortion with no compromise on quality. The DM 40 Pioneer DJ’s speakers are front-ported, which minimizes the problematic crisp sound quality reflection issues of putting them too close to a rear wall.
